Surface area-burnoff correlation for the steam--graphite reaction. [HTGR]

Description: The oxidation of core graphite by steam of air represents a problem area of significant concern in safety analyses for the high temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR). Core and core-support graphite integrity and strength deteriorate with oxidation of the graphite, and oxidation furthermore could affect the rate of fission product release under upset conditions. Consequently, modeling of core response during steam or air ingress conditions requires an expression for the rate of graphite interact… more

Application of the complex equilibrium code QUIL to cesium-impurity equilibria in the primary coolant of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors

Description: An equilibrium analysis has been made of the fission-product cesium in the primary coolant loop of the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR). The species distributions that result at equilibrium have been calculated for various conditions of reactor operation. The cesium species considered were the monomer, dimer, oxides, hydroxides, and the hydride. The effect of cesium sorption isotherms on graphite also was included in the analysis. During normal reactor operations, the abundant species… more

Application of thick film and bulk coating technology to the Subterrene program

Description: From conference on structure-property relationships in thick film and bulk coatings; San Francisco, California, USA (28 Jan The Subterrene is a rock- melting earth-penetration system representing a significant advancement in excavation technology. Temperatures of 1700-2000 deg K are involved, and heated refractorymetal or alloy probes are used. Corrosion problems are severe on the exterior surfaces of the refractory metals used; bulk coatings having the required properties would be extremely de… more

Experimental and numerical optimization of the U-Zr-C ternary phase diagram

Description: The U-Zr-C ternary-phase diagram is optimized using melting point and vapor pressure data recently measured at Los Alamos National Laboratory and by graphical and numerical curve fitting of self-consistent thermodynamic and phase diagram data reported in the literature. The system is described from 2473 K to 3693 K using isothermal ternary phase diagrams. The solidus and liquidus curves of the U{sub x}Zr{sub 1-x}C{sub y} solid solution were estimated from combined thermodynamic and adjusted pha… more
