Evaluation of a high power submillimeter pulsed laser system

Description: This report describes the selection, development, and testing of the system components and presents the power and frequency profiles achieved in tests made on the assembled system. These results, and knowledge gained through design and development work, have suggested improvements in design characteristics to be applied to future research on this diagnostic method. (MOW)

Far-infrared interferometry/polarimetry on the ISX-B tokamak

Description: Theoretical analyses have shown that the current density distribution in a tokamak plasma can be obtained indirectly by the measurement of the poloidal magnetic field created by the current flowing in the plasma discharge. The distribution of this field may be determined by projecting linearly polarized far-infrared (FIR) laser beams through the plasma and measuring the Faraday rotation of the polarization. Since the rotation angle of the polarization vector is proportional to the line integral… more

A 0. 4 mm Interferometer System Using Dielectric Waveguide

Description: A 0.4 mm submillimeter-wave, phase-modulated polarimeter/interferometer is used for simultaneous time-dependent measurement of line-averaged electron density and poloidal field-induced Faraday rotation along chords of the plasma column in ISX-B tokamak. Heterodyna detection and hollow dielectric waveguide are utilized to achieve the high sensitivity required for the multichord equipment.

Far-infrared laser diagnostic on EBT and extreme far-forward laser scattering on ISX

Description: A far-infrared (FIR) laser scattering diagnostic has been installed on the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) experiment, and tests conducted on the system using a TPX Bragg cell show that the system is fully functional. Scattering experiments to date have shown only small detectable signal levels during normal operation and during ion cyclotron heating (ICH) fast-wave and slow-wave propagation experiments. On the Impurity Study Experiment (ISX) the output signal from the rf amplifiers of the FIR interfero… more

Status of the USA program on the development of submillimeter lasers to measure ion temperatures

Description: The concept of ion laser scattering is outlined briefly and the parameters of the required submillimeter laser system are described. The current state of the development of lasers, laser and viewing dumps, and detectors is reviewed. (MHR)

Magneto-optic and electro-optic modulators

Description: An important aspect of the Faraday rotation diagnostic for tokamak plasma measurements has been the development of suitable polarization modulators for submillimeter wavelengths. The problems are to obtain high optical transmission and fast modulation frequencies. At ORNL we have developed both a magneto-optic and an electro-optic submillimeter-wave modulators. These devices have been operated at modulation frequencies of approximately 100 kHz and both have high transmission.

Design of FIR lasers with integrated pump lasers

Description: Tokamak diagnostics require high-power, compact, stable FIR sources for plasma diagnostics. In an effort to meet these requirements at ORNL, we have developed an FIR/CO/sub 2/ laser package that has operated in the rather harsh environment of the ISX-B tokamak experiment for approx. 5000 discharges totaling an operating time of approx. 3000 h. We have continually strived to improve the basic design first conceived over five years ago.

Submillimeter wave propagation in tokamak plasmas

Description: The propagation of submillimeter-waves (smm) in tokamak plasmas has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally to ensure successful measurements of electron density and plasma current distributions in tokamak devices. Theoretical analyses have been carried out to study the polarization of the smm waves in TFTR and ISX-B tokamaks. A multichord smm wave interferometer/polarimeter system has been employed to simultaneously measure the line electron density and poloidal field-induced F… more
