Heat transfer measurements in a forced convection loop with two molten-fluoride salts: LiF--BeF/sub 2/--ThF/sub 2/--UF/sub 4/ and eutectic NaBF/sub 4/--NaF

Description: Heat transfer coefficients were determined experimentally for two molten-fluoride salts (LiF-BeF/sub 2/-ThF/sub 2/-UF/sub 4/ (72-16-12-0.3 mole %) and NaBF/sub 4/-NaF (92-8 mole %) proposed as the fuel salt and coolant salt, respectively, for molten-salt breeder reactors. Information was obtained over a wide range of variables, with salt flowing through 12.7-mm-OD (0.5-in.) Hastelloy N tubing in a forced convection loop (FCL-2b). Satisfactory agreement with the empirical Sieder-Tate correlation… more

Emerging Standards With Application to Accelerator Safety Systems

Description: This paper addresses international standards which can be applied to the requirements for accelerator personnel safety systems. Particular emphasis is given to standards which specify requirements for safety interlock systems which employ programmable electronic subsystems. The work draws on methodologies currently under development for the medical, process control, and nuclear industries.

Helium Sensitivity in Oxygen Deficiency Measurement Equipment

Description: Most accelerators in operation today use liquid helium based superconducting technology in some capacity. Many of these facilities also use fixed and portable oxygen monitors to detect an oxygen deficient atmosphere were the helium to be accidentally released. When released, helium can expand 800 times its liquid volume. Recent helium spill tests at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) uncovered a fundamental flaw in certain types of oxygen deficiency monitoring eq… more

The Control and Diagnostics System for the CEBAF Injector

Description: We present the first experience with the CEBAF injector control and diagnostics system. The computer architecture of the control system has been described elsewhere. The injector system is a model for the CEBAF controls. A computer system controls the gun, the steering magnets, and the focusing elements, and in the near future also the injector rf system. The beam parameters such as current, position, and emittance are measured by various monitors and are automatically analyzed by the computer.
