Design and construction of the ZEUS barrel calorimeter

Description: The mechanical design and construction techniques of the barrel calorimeter for the ZEUS detector are presented. The calorimeter uses alternate layers of depleted uranium and scintillator with one radiation length sampling. The unit cell has e/h = 1 which yields an optimal energy resolution for hadronic jets. We discuss the placing of the structural components and cracks between modules. Details of the construction and assembly effort needed to realize the total calorimeter are reported. 4 figs., 1 tab.

Tests of QCD at HERA: determination of the gluon density

The. tau. one-prong problem and recent measurements by the HRS (High Resolution Spectrometer) collaboration

Description: We summarize recent measurements by the HRS collaboration of the topological branching fractions, the production cross section, the lifetime, and the rate into electrons of the {tau} lepton. CLIC CDR - physics and detectors: CLIC conceptual design report.

Description: This report forms part of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the Compact LInear Collider (CLIC). The CLIC accelerator complex is described in a separate CDR volume. A third document, to appear later, will assess strategic scenarios for building and operating CLIC in successive center-of-mass energy stages. It is anticipated that CLIC will commence with operation at a few hundred GeV, giving access to precision standard-model physics like Higgs and top-quark physics. Then, depending on the physics landscape, CLIC operation would be staged in a few steps ultimately reaching the maximum 3 TeV center-of-mass energy. Such a scenario would maximize the physics potential of CLIC providing new physics discovery potential over a wide range of energies and the ability to make precision measurements of possible new states previously discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main purpose of this document is to address the physics potential of a future multi-TeV e{sup +}e{sup -} collider based on CLIC technology and to describe the essential features of a detector that are required to deliver the full physics potential of this machine. The experimental conditions at CLIC are significantly more challenging than those at previous electron-positron colliders due to the much higher levels of beam-induced backgrounds and the 0.5 ns bunch-spacing. Consequently, a large part of this report is devoted to understanding the impact of the machine environment on the detector with the aim of demonstrating, with the example of realistic detector concepts, that high precision physics measurements can be made at CLIC. Since the impact of background increases with energy, this document concentrates on the detector requirements and physics measurements at the highest CLIC center-of-mass energy of 3 TeV. SiD Letter of Intent

Description: This document presents the current status of the Silicon Detector (SiD) effort to develop an optimized design for an experiment at the International Linear Collider. It presents detailed discussions of each of SiD's various subsystems, an overview of the full GEANT4 description of SiD, the status of newly developed tracking and calorimeter reconstruction algorithms, studies of subsystem performance based on these tools, results of physics benchmarking analyses, an estimate of the cost of the detector, and an assessment of the detector R and D needed to provide the technical basis for an optimised SiD.

High Energy Physics Division semiannual report of research activities, January 1, 1999--June 30, 1999.

Description: In the period January--June 1999 accomplishments for the ANL-HEP division medium energy physics project consisted of the completion of two papers on past Saclay experiments, the beginning of analysis of recent data from the Crystal Ball measurements at the Brookhaven AGS, and preparations for a RHIC polarimeter. Two papers on Saclay pp elastic scattering data were completed by an ANL physicist, submitted and accepted in Physical Review. Results for the spin observable P - A{sub oono} = A{sub ooon} = A{sub y} at over 30 beam kinetic energies between 800 and 2,800 MeV and C.M. angles from about 70{degree}--110{degree} are described. A total of 919 new data points are presented in these articles. The energy dependence at fixed c.m. angles appears smooth, with no evidence for rapid energy-dependent structure. Work has also begun on two additional papers at Argonne and on others at Saclay.

Inclusive. eta. production in. tau. decays

Description: We have searched for inclusive eta production in tau decays using a sample of 2553 events of e{sup +}e{sup minus} {yields} {tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup minus} in the one-three topology. The data were taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer at {radical}s = 29 GeV. Our results are based on an analysis of the {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup minus} invariant mass spectrum to find the narrow peak resulting from the decay sequence {tau} {yields} {eta}x and {eta} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup minus}{pi}{degree}. No clear peak is observed and a 90% confidence upper limit on the process {tau} {yields} {eta}x of 2.1% is found. For decays {tau} {yields} {eta}{eta}x the 90% confidence upper limit is 1.3%. Our best limit on {tau} {yields} {eta}{eta}x is obtained from tau decay to five charged particles with a 90% confidence level upper limit of 0.5%.
