Comparison of cask and drywell storage concepts for a monitored retrievable storage/interim storage system

Description: The Department of Energy, through its Richland Operations Office is evaluating the feasibility, timing, and cost of providing a federal capability for storing the spent fuel, high-level wastes, and transuranic wastes that DOE may be obligated by law to manage until permanent waste disposal facilities are available. Three concepts utilizing a monitored retrievable storage/interim storage (MRS/IS) facility have been developed and analyzed. The first concept, co-location with a reprocessing plant,… more

FBR pellet fabrication - density and dimensional control

Description: The fuel pellet fabricating experience described in this paper involved pellet processing tests using mixed oxide (PuO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2/) powders to produce fast breeder reactor (FBR) fuel pellets. Objectives of the pellet processing tests were to establish processing parameters for sintered-to-size fuel pellets to be used in an irradiation test in the Fast Flux Test Facility and to establish baseline fabrication control information. 26 figures, 7 tables.

Measurements of the microwave power in the wall at EBT-I/S

Description: An understanding of the microwave propagation and absorption in Elmo bumpy torus is critical because the plasma production, the heating, and the stabilization provided by the hot electron rings are dependent on these processes. A microwave power balance model was proposed earlier for EBT. This paper will describe a series of simple experiments designed to test this model by comparing its predictions and assumptions to both calorimetric and broad beam antenna measurements of microwave power at t… more

Fabrication of 0. 5-inch diameter FBR mixed oxide fuel pellets

Description: Large diameter (0.535 inch) mixed oxide fuel pellets for Fast Breeder Reactor application were successfully fabricated by the cold-press-and-sinter technique. Enriched UO/sub 2/, PuO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2/, and PuO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ compositions were fabricated into nominally 90% theoretical density pellets for the UO/sub 2/ and PuO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2/ compositions, and 88% and 93% T.D. for the PuO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ compositions. Some processing adjustments were required to achieve satisfactory pellet q… more

Mechanical design aspects of the Advanced Toroidal Facility Thomson scattering diagnostic

Description: A two-dimensional Thomson scattering system has been designed for the Advanced Toroidal Facility (ATF), a torsatron experiment at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The system is a modification of the Thomson scattering system used on the Impurity Study Experiment (ISX-B) tokamak. It will provide measurements of electron temperature (T/sub e/) and density (n/sub e/) at 15 points along a vertical chord. With multiple shots, a T/sub e/ and n/sub e/ map of a toroidal cross section of ATF ca… more

Detailed modeling of microwave energy deposition in EBT devices

Description: Ray-tracing studies have been combined with a simple wave power balance model to provide a complete, albeit approximate, description of microwave power deposition in the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT-I), EBT-Scale (EBT-S), and EBT Proof-of-Principle (EBT-P) devices. Electron cyclotron absorption of ordinary and extraordinary waves by the combined core plasma and relativistic annuli is calculated using a fully relativistic damping package developed for the RAYS geometrical optics code. The rays are trac… more

ICRF direct electron heating experiments in TFTR

Description: Direct electron damping of the fast wave is a prerequisite to a viable current drive scenario for future steady-state tokamaks. It is also an attractive heating altemative to the standard ion resonance heating methods for DT experiments on TFTR because it does not require the addition of non-reactive ion species and avoids minority ion tails during studies of alpha-particle effects. The absence of minority ions in direct electron heating (DEH) also allows the use of RF power modulation to deter… more

ICRF heating on helical devices

Description: Ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating is currently in use on CHS and W7AS and is a major element of the heating planned for steady state helical devices. In helical devices, the lack of a toroidal current eliminates both disruptions and the need for ICRF current drive, simplifying the design of antenna structures as compared to tokamak applications. However the survivability of plasma facing components and steady state cooling issues are directly applicable to tokamak devices. Results… more

Oxygen-to-metal ratio control during fabrication of mixed oxide fast breeder reactor fuel pellets

Description: Oxygen-to-metal ratio (O/M) of mixed oxide fuel pellets can be controlled during fabrication by proper selection of binder (type and content) and sintering conditions. Sintering condition adjustments involved the passing of Ar--8% H/sub 2/ sintering gas across a cryostat ice bath controlled to temperatures ranging from -5 to -60/sup 0/C to control as-sintered pellet O/M ratio. As-sintered fuel pellet O/M decreased with increasing Sterotex binder and PuO/sub 2/ concentrations, increasing sinteri… more

308 Building Zone I stabilization and confinement

Description: The 308 Building (Fast Flux Test Facility [FFTF] fuel supply) at the Hanford Site, located in Richland, Washington, is currently in transition to shutdown status. After shutdown, the facility will be maintained/surveilled and turned over to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Facility Transition and Management (EM-60) for utilization, remedial action, or decontamination and decommissioning (D&D). This may require that the facility be maintained in the shutdown mode for up to 30 years.… more

Measured Thomson scattering T/sub e/ profiles, spectroscopic T/sub i/ values, stored energy, and spectroscopic emission levels may be reproduced with the predictive transport code PROCTR using a multi-pass ECH model and assuming neoclassical heat transport for both electrons (xie) and ions (xii). In addition, xi… more

Two frequency ICRF operation on TFTR

Description: Modifications have been made recently to allow two of the ICRF antennas (bays L and M) on TFTR to operate at either of two frequencies, 43 MHz or 64 MHz. This was accomplished by lengthening the resonant loops (2{Lambda} at 43 MHz, 3{Lambda} at 64 MHz) and replacing the conventional quarter wave impedance transformers with a tapered impedance design. The other two antennas (bays K and N) will operate at a fixed frequency, 43 MHz. The two frequency operation will allow a combination of {sup 3}He… more
