A proposal to study small angle p -p scattering at very high energies

We propose to measure small angle p-p scattering by using a thin foil and a hydrogen jet target to intercept a small fraction of the beam without interference with the acceleration process. The measurements are based on the detection of the slow recoil proton and will yield the energy dependence of (a) the slope of the p-p nuclear diffraction peak, (b) the real part of the nuclear scattering amplitude, (c) the diffractive excitation of isobars.
