MEASUREMENT OF LINEAR COUPLING RESONANCE IN RHIC.

Description: Linear coupling is one of the factors that determine beam lifetime in RHIC. The traditional method of measuring the minimum tune separation requires a tune scan and can't be done parasitically or during the acceleration ramp. A new technique of using ac dipoles to measure linear coupling resonance has been developed at RHIC. This method measures the degree of coupling by comparing the amplitude of the horizontal coherent excitation with the amplitude of the vertical coherent excitation if the b… more

PRINCIPLE OF SKEW QUADRUPOLE MODULATION TO MEASURE BETATRON COUPLING.

Description: The measurement of the residual betatron coupling via skew quadrupole modulation is a new diagnostics technique that has been developed and tested at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) as a very promising method for the linear decoupling on the ramp. By modulating the strengths of different skew quadrupole families the two eigentunes are precisely measured with the phase lock loop system. The projections of the residual coupling coefficient onto the skew quadrupole coupling modulation d… more

HIGH LUMINOSITY RHIC INSERTIONS, 0.5M BETA AT IP.

Description: An increase in RHIC collision luminosity is possible by reducing the beam size at the interaction point (IP). They present a method for reducing the IP beta function, {beta}*, from the design minimum of 1m to 0.5m. They demonstrate that this {beta}* = 0.5m configuration is achievable with existing RHIC power supplies for 100 GeV protons. They discuss the correction of the higher order IR multi-poles and the second order chromaticity.

ATR Magnet Transfer Functions

Description: In order to establish the correlation between power supply currents and magnet strengths for the ATR magnets, one needs to assign a Transfer Function to each magnet. There are several types of magnets installed in the ATR lines and not all of them are measured: typically, a subset in within each magnet group has been measured.

LOCAL DECOUPLING IN THE LHC INTERACTION REGIONS

Description: Local decoupling is a technique to correct coupling locally and operationally, that is, without a priori knowledge of the underlying skew quadrupole errors. The method is explained and applied to the correction of coupling in the interaction regions of the LHC at collision.

Comparing and Defining Magnetic Multipoles: I. MAD and TEAPOT And II. RHIC Measurements and TEAPOT

Description: The definitions of the magnetic field in MAD and in the standard multipole expansion (SME) used internally by Teapot are different. This note, perhaps for the umpTeenth time, defines the relationship between the two field definitions, assuming that they are in fact referring to the same physical quantity. After this discussion we define the relationship between RHIC's measured multipole coefficients and those of Teapot.

RHIC tracking studies with real magnets in real places

Description: Results from RHIC tracking studies in which measured magnetic field errors are used in all arc magnets are reported. the dependence of betatron tunes on initial amplitudes, aspect ratio, and momentum are reported and are not significantly different from measured tune dependences when randomly generated magnetic field errors are used in all magnets. Survival plots at injection and storage are also consistent with previous determinations.

Analysis of Availability and Reliability in Rhic Operations.

Description: RHIC has been successfully operated for 5 years as a collider for different species, ranging from heavy ions including gold and copper, to polarized protons. We present a critical analysis of reliability data for RHIC that not only identifies the principal factors limiting availability but also evaluates critical choices at design times and assess their impact on present machine performance. RHIC availability data are typical when compared to similar high-energy colliders. The critical analysis… more

The linkage of Zlib to Teapot for auto-differentiation map extraction and nonlinear analysis

Description: The differential Lie algebraic numerical library, Zlib has been linked to Teapot, the accelerator simulator code. This makes possible the use of the operational correction features of Teapot to produce a corrected lattice, and then choose either map or thin element-by-element tracking for tracking studies. Thin-element tracking is more accurate but slower than map tracking; therefore, the option of choosing one or the other is very desirable.

The Application of the SXF Lattice Description and the UAL Software Environment to the Analysis of the LHC.

Description: A software environment for accelerator modeling has been developed which includes the UAL (Unified Accelerator Library), a collection of accelerator physics libraries with a Per1 interface for scripting, and the SXF (Standard eXchange Format), a format for accelerator description which extends the MAD sequence by including deviations from design values. SXF interfaces have been written for several programs, including MAD9 and MAD8 via the doom database, Cosy, TevLat and UAL itself, which includ… more

Preparing accelerator systems for the RHIC sextant commissioning

Description: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) construction is progressing steadily towards completion in 1999 when beams will circulate in both collider rings. One of the major tests of the RHIC project was the commissioning of the first sextant with gold ion beams in early 1997. This is a report on preparation of the RHIC accelerator systems for the first sextant test. It includes beam position monitors, timing, injection correction through the magnetic septum and kickers, current transformers, f… more

RHIC sextant test: Accelerator systems and performance

Description: One sextant of the RHIC Collider was commissioned in early 1997 with beam. We describe here the performance of the accelerator systems, instrumentation subsystems and application software. We also describe a ramping test without beam that took place after the commissioning with beam. Finally, we analyze the implications of accelerator systems performance and their impact on the planning for RHIC installation and commissioning.

Summary of the RHIC Retreat 2007

Description: The RHIC Retreat 2007 took place on July 16-17 2007 at the Foxwoods Resort in CT, about 3 weeks after the end of the RHIC Run-7. The goal of the Retreat is traditionally to plan the upcoming run in the light of the results from the previous one, by providing a snapshot of the present understanding of the machine and a forum for free and frank discussion. A particular attention was paid to the challenge of increasing the time at store, and the related issue of system reliability. An interesting … more
