Studies of nuclei using radioactive beams. Progress report, May 1988--July 1989

Description: The 12 month period from May 1988 to July 1989 represents the first full year of our 18 month pilot program in nuclear structure research. In this period, research was initiated to develop a capability for radioactive secondary beams at Argonne National Laboratory using the Atlas and the new Fragment Mass Analyzer (FMA), which is currently under construction. Two major new detector facilities are currently in the final stages of design and testing. The Large-Area, Scintillator Telescope (LAST) … more

Gammasphere software development

Description: Activities of the nuclear physics group are described. Progress was made in organizing the Gammasphere Software Working Group, establishing a nuclear computing facility, participating in software development at Lawrence Berkeley, developing a common data file format, and adapting the ORNL UPAK software to run at Gammasphere. A universal histogram object was developed that defines a file format and provides for an objective-oriented programming model. An automated liquid nitrogen fill system was… more

Gammasphere software development. Progress report

Description: This report describes the activities of the nuclear physics group at Mississippi State University which were performed during 1993. Significant progress has been made in the focus areas: chairing the Gammasphere Software Working Group (SWG); assisting with the porting and enhancement of the ORNL UPAK histogramming software package; and developing standard formats for Gammasphere data products. In addition, they have established a new public ftp archive to distribute software and software develo… more

High spin states and the competition of spherical and strongly deformed shapes in the A = 70 to 80 region

Description: A wide variety of collective band structures are seen in Ge to Sr nuclei to make this an important new testing ground for nuclear models. These include bands built on coexisting and competing near-spherical and deformed shapes, ..gamma.. vibrational bands and multiple positive and negative parity bands. Ground state bands in Ge and Kr but not /sup 78/ /sup 80/Sr are crossed at the 8/sup +/ to 12/sup +/ levels. Gaps in the Nilsson levels for both N and Z = 38 at large deformation lead to large g… more
