Calculated neutron spectrum from 800-MeV protons incident on a copper beam stop

Description: A Monte Carlo calculation was performed to obtain the neutron spectrum generated by 800-MeV protons incident on the LAMPF main copper beam stop. The total flux is calculated to be of the order of 10$sup 13$ n/cm$sup 2$-sec-mA at full-beam intensity of 1 mA, with flux spectra calculated for angles of 20$sup 0$, 30$sup 0$, 60$sup 0$, 90$sup 0$, 120$sup 0$, and 150$sup 0$. PDP 11/03 based, dual-parameter data acquisition system

Description: A system was built using a PDP-11/03 to acquire nuclear spectroscopic data either as dual-parameter coincidence data or as two single-parameter spectra. Two nuclear spectroscopy ADC's are connected through a locally built interface to a PDP-11/03. The computer will either store the data from the ADC's as two independent spectra or store the data in two-parameter list format depending on the program used. Some initial examination of the dual-parameter data can be done to eliminate bad points fro… more

Philosophy of a computer-automated counting system

Description: The LAMPF Nuclear Chemistry computer system is designed to provide both real-time control of data acquisition and facilities for data processing for a large variety of users. It is a PDP-11/34 connected to a parallel CAMAC branch highway as well as a large variety of peripherals. The philosophy for the design of this system is discussed; such points as use of the computer for control only versus direct data acquisition by the computer, why a CAMAC system was chosen, and the advantages and disad… more

Future directions of C3 research at DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)

Description: Research into C3 related problems is a major effort of the Information Science and Technology Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The major thrusts of projects is in the area of future, high-risk efforts, often resulting in the development of a conceptual model or prototype. Some of these prototypes are then further developed to provide an infrastructure for future research. The programs can be divided into two groups: base technology research programs and testbed programs.… more

Who's protecting you from hazardous substances

Description: Employee accidents, life endangering spills of harmful chemicals, toxic materials leaching into drinking water, polluted air, crippling side effects of wonder metals and products, and human and animal deaths made it apparent that in order to protect and preserve the community and the environment, the community needed to be aware/knowledgeable of chemical uses and related possible dangers, i.e., it was time to establish rules and regulations for the use and disposal of hazardous substances and c… more

Molecular Eigenstate Spectroscopy: Application to the Intramolecular Dynamics of Some Polyatomic Molecules in the 3000 to 7000 Cm-1 Region. Progress Report, September 1, 1990--January 31, 1993

Description: This project uses high resolution infrared spectroscopy to probe the mechanism of intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) in ultracold isolated polyatomic molecules. Single resonance spectra of 1-butyne and ethanol show that qualitatively different coupling mechanisms dominate in each case anharmonic and Coriolis coupling respectively. A random matrix method for simulation of these spectra has been implemented which allows estimation of the strength of the various mechanisms at each sta… more

Description: A workshop to discuss opportunities for research using the Advanced Light Source (ALS) was held as a part of the first annual ALS users meeting at the Berkeley Convention Center, Berkeley, California, June 2--3, 1988. The participants were from university and governmental laboratories, and some of those attending had had experience using synchrotron light sources. Because the Earth Science interests had not been voiced or considered in previous workshops or meetings of the ALS groups, it was th… more

Fundamental studies of the mechanism of catalytic reactions with catalysts effective in the gasification of carbon solids and the oxidative coupling of methane. Quarterly report, April 1, 1994--June 30, 1994

Description: Catalytic gasification work has been completed and no other work is planned in the general area of catalytic gasification of coals and chars has operated without a post-doctoral fellow because of budget limitations during the first two quarters of FY1994. Dr. S. Sundararajan joined the group in April 1994 and will be assigned to the project throughout the remaining of the fiscal year. Results published by Hamakawa, et al. in The Journal of the Electrochemical Society have confirmed the concept … more

Fundamental studies of the mechanism of catalytic reactions with catalysts effective in the gasification of carbon solids and the oxidative coupling of methane. Quarterly report, January 1, 1995--March 31, 1995

Description: The synthesis of ethane and ethylene from methane and oxygen will be carried out in novel hydrogen transport inorganic membranes and in cyclic reactors in order to prevent undesirable secondary reactions of C{sub 2} molecules to CO and CO{sub 2}. Neither inorganic membrane reactors nor cyclic tubular reactors are presently used in commercial processes. Their application to catalytic reactions represents a novel application of engineering and solid-state chemistry concepts to catalytic reactions… more

Steady-state and transient catalytic oxidation and coupling of methane

Description: Four papers have been published on mechanisms and site requirements for oxidative coupling of methane to ethane and ethylene and on synthesis of thin catalytic films during fiscal 1993. These publications also describe a unique inhibiting effect of water on the rate of undesired full oxidation pathways during oxidative coupling. Five quarterly reports have been written and submitted during the covered period. These findings and recently reported models of surface and gas phase reactions of meth… more

Steady-state and transient catalytic oxidation and coupling of methane

Description: This project addresses the conversion of methane from natural gas into ethane, ethylene and higher hydrocarbons. Our research explores the mechanistic and practical implications of carrying out the methane oxidative coupling reaction in reactor designs other than conventional packed-beds with co-fed reactants. These alternate reactor designs are needed to prevent the full oxidation of methane, which limits C{sub 2}, yields in methane oxidative coupling reactions. The research strategy focuses o… more
