Search for Charged Lepton Violation in Narrow Upsilon Decays

Description: Charged lepton flavor violating processes are unobservable in the standard model, but they are predicted to be enhanced in several extensions to the standard model, including supersymmetry and models with leptoquarks or compositeness. We present a search for such processes in a sample of 99 x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(2S) decays and 117 x 10{sup 6} {Upsilon}(3S) decays collected with the BABAR detector. We place upper limits on the branching fractions {Beta}({Upsilon}(nS) {yields} e{sup {+-}}{tau}{sup {-+}}) and {Beta}({Upsilon}(nS) {yields} {mu}{sup {+-}}{tau}{sup {-+}}) (n = 2, 3) at the 10{sup -6} level and use these results to place lower limits of order 1 TeV on the mass scale of charged lepton flavor violating effective operators.

Improved Measurement of B^ \to\rho^ \rho^0 and Determination of the Quark-Mixing Phase Angle~\alpha

Description: The authors present improved measurements of the branching fraction {Beta}, the longitudinal polarization fraction f{sub L}, and the direct CP asymmetry A{sub CP} in the B meson decay channel B{sup +} {yields} {rho}{sup +}{rho}{sup 0}. The data sample was collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. The results are {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {rho}{sup +}{rho}{sup 0}) = (23.7 {+-} 1.4 {+-} 1.4) x 10{sup -6}, f{sub L} = 0.950 {+-} 0.015 {+-} 0.006, and A{sub CP} = -0.054 {+-} 0.055 {+-} 0.010, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Based on these results, they perform an isospin analysis and determine the CKM weak phase angle {alpha} to be (92.4{sub -6.5}{sup +6.0}){sup 0}.

Analysis of the D+ --> K- pi+ e+ nu_e decay channel

Description: Using 347.5 fb{sup -1} of data recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II electron-positron collider, 244 x 10{sup 3} signal events for the D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e} decay channel are analyzed. This decay mode is dominated by the {bar K}*(892){sup 0} contribution. We determine the {bar K}*(892){sup 0} parameters: m{sub K*(892){sup 0}} = (895.4{+-}0.2{+-}0.2) MeV/c{sup 2}, {Lambda}{sub K*(892){sup 0}}{sup 0} = (46.5{+-}0.3{+-}0.2) MeV/c{sup 2} and the Blatt-Weisskopf parameter r{sub BW} = 2.1{+-}0.5{+-}0.5 (GeV/c){sup -1} where the first uncertainty comes from statistics and the second from systematic uncertainties. We also measure the parameters defining the corresponding hadronic form factors at q{sup 2} = 0 (r{sub V} = V(0)/A{sub 1}(0) = 1.463{+-}0.017{+-}0.031, r{sup 2} = A{sub 2}(0)/A{sub 1}(0) = 0.801{+-}0.020{+-}0.020) and the value of the axial-vector pole mass parameterizing the q{sup 2} variation of A{sub 1} and A{sub 2}: m{sub A} = (2.63{+-}0.10{+-}0.13) GeV/c{sup 2}. The S-wave fraction is equal to (5.79{+-}0.16{+-}0.15)%. Other signal components correspond to fractions below 1%. Using the D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +} channel as a normalization, we measure the D{sup +} semileptonic branching fraction: {Beta}(D{sup +} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}) = (4.00 {+-} 0.03 {+-} 0.04 {+-} 0.09) x 10{sup -2} where the third uncertainty comes from external inputs. We then obtain the value of the hadronic form factor A{sub 1} at q{sup 2} = 0: A{sub 1}(0) = 0.6200 {+-} 0.0056 {+-} 0.0065 {+-} 0.0071. Fixing the P-wave parameters we measure the phase of the S-wave for several values of the K{pi} mass. These results confirm those obtained with K{pi} production at small momentum transfer in fixed target experiments.

Observation of the Decay B- --> Ds(*) K- l- nubar

Description: We report the observation of the decay B{sup -} {yields} D{sub s}{sup (*)+} K{sup -}{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}} based on 342 fb{sup -1} of data collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} storage rings at SLAC. A simultaneous fit to three D{sub s}{sup +} decay chains is performed to extract the signal yield from measurements of the squared missing mass in the B meson decay. We observe the decay B{sup -} {yields} D{sub s}{sup (*)+} K{sup -}{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}} with a significance greater than five standard deviations (including systematic uncertainties) and measure its branching fraction to be {Beta}(B{sup -} {yields} D{sub s}{sup (*)+} K{sup -}{ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}}) = [6.13{sub -1.03}{sup +1.04}(stat.) {+-} 0.43(syst.) {+-} 0.51({Beta}(D{sub s}))] x 10{sup -4}, where the last error reflects the limited knowledge of the D{sub s} branching fractions.

Search for b-->u transitions in B- --> DK- and B- --> D*K- Decays

Description: We report results from an updated study of the suppressed decays B{sup -} --> DK{sup -} and B{sup -} --> D*K{sup -} followed by D --> K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, where D{sup (*)} indicates a D{sup (*)0} or a {anti D}{sup (*)0} meson, and D{sup *} --> D{tau}{sup 0} or D{sup *} --> D{gamma}. These decays are sensitive to the CKM unitarity triangle angle {gamma} due to interference between the b --> c transition B{sup -} --> D{sup (*)0}K{sup -} followed by the double Cabibbo-suppressed decay D{sup 0} --> K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}, and the b --> u transition B{sup -} --> {anti D}{sup (*)0}K{sup -} followed by the Cabibbo-favored decay {anti D}{sup 0} --> K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}. We also report an analysis of the decay B{sup -} --> D{sup (*)}{pi}{sup -} with the D decaying into the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed mode D --> K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}. Our results are based on 467 million {Upsilon}(4S) --> B{anti B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. We measure the ratios R{sup (*)} of the suppressed ([K{sup +}{pi}{sup -}]{sub D}K{sup -}/{pi}{sup -}) to favored ([K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}]{sub D}K{sup -}/{pi}{sup -}) branching fractions as well as the CP asymmetries A{sup (*)} of those modes. We see indications of signals for the B{sup -} --> DK{sup -} and B{sup -} --> D{sup *}{sub D{pi}{sup 0}}K{sup -} suppressed modes, with statistical significances of 2.1 and 2.2{sigma}, respectively, and we measure: R{sub DK} = (1.1 {+-} 0.6 {+-} 0.2) x 10{sup -2}, A{sub DK} = -0.86 {+-} 0.47 {sup +0.12}{sub -0.16}, R{sup *}{sub (D{pi}{sup 0})K} = (1.8 {+-} 0.9 {+-} 0.4) x 10{sup -2}, A{sup *}{sub (D{pi}{sup 0})K} = +0.77 {+-} 0.35 {+-} 0.12, R{sup *}{sub (D{gamma})K} = (1.3 {+-} 1.4 {+-} 0.8) x 10{sup -2}, A{sup *}{sub (D{gamma})K} = +0.36 {+-} 0.94 {sup +0.25}{sub -0.41}, where the ...

A Model-Independent Search for the decay B->l nu gamma

Description: The authors present a search for the radiative leptonic decay B{sup +} {yields} {ell}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ell}}{gamma}, where {ell} = e, {mu}, using a data sample of 465 million B{bar B} pairs collected by the BABAR experiment. In this analysis, they fully reconstruct the hadronic decay of one of the B mesons in {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{sup +}B{sup -} decays, then search for evidence of B{sup +} {yields} {ell}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ell}}{gamma} in the rest of the event. They observe no significant evidence of signal decays and report model-independent branching fraction upper limits of {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} e{sup +}{nu}{sub e}{gamma}) < 17 x 10{sup -6}, {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {mu}{sup +}{nu}{sub {mu}}{gamma}) < 24 x 10{sup -6}, and {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {ell}{sup +}{nu}{sub {ell}}{gamma}) < 15.6 x 10{sup -6} ({ell} = e or {mu}), all at the 90% confidence level.

Description: The authors report preliminary results from a study of the decay B{sup 0} {yields} {bar D}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} using a data sample of 470.9 {+-} 2.8 million B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance. Using the Dalitz-plot analysis technique, they find contributions from the intermediate resonances D*{sub 2}(2460){sup -}, D*{sub 0}(2400){sup -}, {rho}(770){sup 0} and f{sub 2}(1270) as well as a {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} S-wave term, a {bar D}{sup 0}{pi}{sup -} nonresonant S-wave term and a virtual D*(2010) amplitude. They measure the branching fractions of the contributing decays.

Test of Lepton Universality in Upsilon(1S) Decays at BaBar

Description: The ratio R{sub {tau}{mu}}({Upsilon}(1S))={Lambda}{sub {Upsilon}(1S){yields}{tau}{sup +}{tau}{sup -}}/{Lambda}{sub {Upsilon}(1S){yields}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup -}} is measured using a sample of (121.8 {+-} 1.2) x 10{sup 6}{Upsilon}(3S) events recorded by the BABAR detector. This measurement is intended as a test of lepton universality and as a search for a possible light pseudoscalar Higgs boson. In the standard model (SM) this ratio is expected to be close to 1. Any significant deviations would violate lepton universality and could be introduced by the coupling to a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson. The analysis studies the decays {Upsilon}(3S) {yields} {Upsilon}(1S){sub {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}}, {Upsilon}(1S) {yields} {ell}{sup +}{ell}{sup -}, where l = {mu}, {tau}. The result, R{sub {tau}{mu}}({Upsilon}(1S))=1.005 {+-} 0.013(stat) {+-} 0.022(syst), shows no deviation from the expected SM value, while improving the precision with respect to previous measurements.

Measurement of the Absolute Branching Fractions for $D^-_s\!\rightarrow\!\ell^-\bar{\nu}_{\ell}$ and Extraction of the Decay Constant $f_{D_s}$

Description: The absolute branching fractions for the decays D{sub s}{sup -} {yields} {ell}{sup -}{bar {nu}}{sub {ell}} ({ell} = e, {mu}, or {tau}) are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 521 fb{sup -1} collected at center of mass energies near 10.58 GeV with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} collider at SLAC. The number of D{sub s}{sup -} mesons is determined by reconstructing the recoiling system DKX{gamma} in events of the type e{sup +}e{sup -}DKXD*{sub s}{sup -}, where D*{sub s}{sup -} {yields} D{sub s}{sup -}{gamma} and X represents additional pions from fragmentation. The D{sub s}{sup -} {yields} {ell}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {ell}} events are detected by full or partial reconstruction of the recoiling system DKX{gamma}{ell}. The branching fraction measurements are combined to determine the D{sub s}{sup -} decay constant f{sub D{sub s}} = (258.6 {+-} 6.4 {+-} 7.5) MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Search for the Rare Decay B -> K nu nubar

Description: We present a search for the rare decays B{sup +} {yields} K{sup +}{nu}{bar {nu}} and B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup 0}{nu}{bar {nu}} using 459 million B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Flavor-changing neutral-current decays such as these are forbidden at tree level but can occur through one-loop diagrams in the Standard Model (SM), with possible contributions from new physics at the same order. The presence of two neutrinos in the final state makes identification of signal events challenging, so reconstruction in the semileptonic decay channels B {yields} D{sup (*)}l{nu} of the B meson recoiling from the signal B is used to suppress backgrounds. We set an upper limit at the 90% confidence level of 1.3 x 10{sup -5} on the total branching fraction for B{sup +} {yields} K{sup +}{nu}{bar {nu}}, and 5.6 x 10{sup -5} for B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup 0}{nu}{bar {nu}}. We additionally report partial branching fractions in two ranges of di-neutrino mass squared for B{sup +} {yields} K{sup +}{nu}{bar {nu}}.

Observation and Study of the Baryonic B-meson Decays B to D(*) p pbar (pi) (pi)

Description: We present results for B-meson decay modes involving a charm meson, protons, and pions using 455 x 10{sup 6} B{bar B} pairs recorded by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. The branching fractions are measured for the following ten decays: {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup 0}p{bar p}, {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup 0}p{bar p}, {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -}, {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -}, B{sup -} {yields} D{sup 0}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -}, B{sup -} {yields} D*{sup 0}pp{pi}{sup -}, {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup 0}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}, {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup 0}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}, B{sup -} {yields} D{sup +}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup -}, and B{sup -} {yields} D*{sup +}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup -}. The four B{sup -} and the two five-body B{sup 0} modes are observed for the first time. The four-body modes are enhanced compared to the three- and the five-body modes. In the three-body modes, the M(p{bar p}) and M(D{sup (*)0}p) invariant mass distributions show enhancements near threshold values. In the four-body mode {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}p{bar p}{pi}{sup -}, the M(p{pi}{sup -}) distribution shows a narrow structure of unknown origin near 1.5GeV/c{sup 2}. The distributions for the five-body modes, in contrast to the others, are similar to the expectations from uniform phase-space predictions.

Evidence for B+ --> tau+ nu_tau Decays using Hadronic B Tags

Description: We present a search for the decay B{sup +} --> {tau}{sup +} {nu}{sub {tau}} using 467.8 x 10{sup 6} B{anti B} pairs collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II B-Factory. We select a sample of events with on completely reconstructed B{sup -} in an hadronic decay mode (B{sup -} --> D{sup (*)0}X{sup -} and B{sup -} --> J/{psi} X{sup -}). We examine the rest of the event to search for a B{sup +} --> {tau}{sup +} {nu}{sub {tau}} decay. We identify the {tau}{sup +} lepton in the following modes: {tau}{sup +} --> e{sup +} {nu}{sub e}{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}}, {tau}{sup +} --> {mu}{sup +} {nu}{sub {mu}}{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}}, {tau}{sup +} --> {pi}{sup +}{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}} and {tau}{sup +} --> {rho}{anti {nu}}{sub {tau}}. Measurement of $D^0-overline{D}^0$ mixing parameters using $D^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^ \pi^-$ and $D^0 \to K_S^0 K^ K^-$ decays

Description: We report a direct measurement of D{sup 0}-{bar D}{sup 0} mixing parameters through a time-dependent amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plots of D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} and, for the first time, D{sup 0} {yields} K{sub S}{sup 0}K{sup +}K{sup -} decays. The low-momentum pion {pi}{sub s}{sup +} in the decay D*{sup +} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi}{sub s}{sup +} identifies the flavor of the neutral D meson at its production. Using 468.5 fb{sup -1} of e{sup +}e{sup -} colliding-beam data recorded near {radical}s = 10.6 GeV by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider at SLAC, we measure the mixing parameters x = [1.6 {+-} 2.3 (stat.) {+-} 1.2 (syst.) {+-} 0.8 (model)] x 10{sup -3}, and y = [5.7 {+-} 2.0 (stat.) {+-} 1.3 (syst.) {+-} 0.7 (model)] x 10{sup -3}. These results provide the best measurement to date of x and y. The knowledge of the value of x, in particular, is crucial for understanding the origin of mixing.

Description: We report the results of a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decays, B{sup +} {yields} {eta}{sup {prime}}{ell}{sup +}{nu} and B{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{ell}{sup +}{nu}, undertaken with approximately 464 million B{bar B} pairs collected at the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. The analysis uses events in which the signal B decays are reconstructed with a loose neutrino reconstruction technique. We obtain partial branching fractions for B{sup +} {yields} {eta}{ell}{sup +}{nu} and B{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{ell}{sup +}{nu} decays in three and 12 bins of q{sup 2}, respectively, from which we extract the f{sub +}(q{sup 2}) form-factor shapes and the total branching fractions {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {eta}{ell}{sup +}{nu}) = (0.36 {+-} 0.05{sub stat} {+-} 0.04{sub syst}) x 10{sup -4} and {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup -}{ell}{sup +}{nu}) = (1.42 {+-} 0.05{sub stat} {+-} 0.07{sub syst}) x 10{sup -4}. We also measure {Beta}(B{sup +} {yields} {eta}{sup {prime}}{ell}{sup +}{nu}) = (0.24 {+-} 0.08{sub stat} {+-} 0.03{sub syst}) x 10{sup -4}. We obtain values for the magnitude of the CKM matrix element |V{sub ub}| using three different QCD calculations.

Measurement of the branching fraction for $\tau\to\eta K\nu_\tau$ and a search for second-class currents in $\tau\to\eta\pi\nu_\tau$ with $\eta\to\pi^ \pi^-\pi0$

Description: The authors report on analyses of tau lepton decays {tau}{sup -} {yields} {eta}K{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}} and {tau}{sup -} {yields} {eta}{pi}{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}}, with {eta} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}, using 470 fb{sup -1} of data from the BABAR experiment at PEP-II, collected at center-of-mass energies at and near the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance. They measure the branching fraction for the {tau}{sup -} {yields} {eta}K{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}} decay mode, {Beta}({tau}{sup -} {yields} {eta}K{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}}) = (1.42 {+-} 0.11(stat) {+-} 0.07(syst)) x 10{sup -4}, and report a 95% confidence level upper limit for the second-class current process {tau}{sup -} {yields} {eta}{pi}{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}}, {Beta}({tau}{sup -} {yields} {eta}{pi}{sup -}{nu}{sub {tau}}) < 9.9 x 10{sup -5}.

A Search for the Rare Decay $B\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$

Description: We report the result of a search for the rare decay B{sup 0} {yields} {gamma}{gamma} in 426 fb{sup -1} of data, corresponding to 226 million B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} pairs, collected on the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider using the BABAR detector. We use a maximum likelihood fit to extract the signal yield and observe 21{sub -12}{sup +13} signal events with a statistical signficance of 1.9 {sigma}. This corresponds to a branching fraction {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {gamma}{gamma}) = (1.7 {+-} 1.1(stat.) {+-} 0.2(syst.)) x 10{sup -7}. Based on this result, we set a 90% confidence level upper limit of {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} {gamma}{gamma}) < 3.2 x 10{sup -7}.

Search for B+ meson decay to a1+ K*0

Description: We present a search for the decay B{sup +} --> {alpha}{sup +}{sub 1}(1260)K*{sup 0}(892). The data, collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, represent 465 million B{anti B} pairs produced in e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilation at the energy of the {Upsilon}(4S). We find no significant signal and set an upper limit at 90% confidence level on the product of branching fractions B(B{sup +} --> {alpha}{sup +}{sub 1}(1260)K*{sup 0}(892)) x B({alpha}{sup +}{sub 1}(1260) --> {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}) of 1.8 x 10{sup -6}.

Search for CP Violation using $T$-odd Correlations in $D^0 \to K^+ K^- \pi^+ \pi^-$ Decays

Description: We search for CP violation in a sample of 4.7 x 10{sup 4} Cabibbo suppressed D{sup 0} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} decays. We use 470 fb{sup -1} of data recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} storage rings running at center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. CP violation is searched for in the difference between the T-odd asymmetries, obtained using triple product correlations, measured for D{sup 0} and {bar D}{sup 0} decays. The measured CP violation parameter is A{sub T} = (1.0 {+-} 5.1{sub stat} {+-} 4.4{sub syst}) x 10{sup -3}.
