Studies Concerning the Production of Lactobacillic Acid in Lactobacillus Plantarum

Description: This study is concerned with certain factors affecting the content of lactobacillic acid in Lactobacillus plantarum. Three main areas of investigation are reported herein. The effects of both the oxygen tension and the pH of the culture medium on the accumulation of lactobacillic acid were determined. In addition, monolayer studies were conducted to determine the influence of cyclopropane fatty acid content on the molecular packing of membrane lipids.

Effects of X-irradiation on Potassium Flux in Isolated Nerves

Description: The purpose of this study, therefore, was threefold in nature: (1) to determine the effects of x-irradiation on the influx and efflux of potassium in compound nerve fibers (2) to attempt to relate the radiation-induced changes in electrical activity with potassium flux and (3) to use the information obtained to gain insight into the possible cellular site (s) of radiation insult to compound nerves.

Water and Ion Eflux in Isolated Onion Roots

Description: The aims of this study were: (1) to determine simultaneously by means of a micro-potometric method the rates of water and various isotopic ion effluxes from isolated onion roots; (2) to determine and compare the effects of metabolic inhibitors on both processes simultaneously; (3) to ascertain the similarity or dissimilarity of mechanisms involved with these two processes; (4) to ascertain the role of active metabolism in each of these processes; (5) to shed light on possible gearing mechanism(s) between metabolic and transport processes.

Effects of X-Irradiation on Water and Ion Flux in Isolated Roots

Description: Due to the relatively small amount of work concerning radiation, it was thought feasible to use ionizing radiation as a tool to study the relationship between water and salt flux in isolated root systems. Moreover, the more quantitative potometric method lends itself well to such a study, since the two processes can be followed simultaneously. the aims of this study, therefore, were 1) to determine effects of X-irradiation on water, calcium and potassium flux in excised onion roots; 2) to determine the dose levels required for producing permeability changes; 3) to investigate the nature of radiation damage to root systems; and 4) to attempt to shed light on the relation between water transport and ion movement in root systems.

Parasites of the Cricket Frog, Acris Crepitans, of Denton County, Texas

Description: The purpose of this study was threefold. The literature concerning parasites of A. crepitans was to be brought up to date. Contributions to the general body of knowledge pertaining to the parasitic fauna of host specimens of A. crepitans and specifically those found in Denton County, Texas, were to be made. Finally, specimens found parasitizing host specimens of A. crepitans were to be preserved and classified.

Liver Glyoxalase Activity in Normal Mice and Mice with Lymphosarcoma

Description: It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the variation of glyoxalase activity in liver of normal mice and in the liver of mice bearing a lymphosarcoma and to compare the glyoxalase activity of the lymphosarcoma with values previously reported in the literature for other tumor types. Further, if there is indeed a variation in liver glyoxalase activity between normal and tumor-bearing mice, it will be compared to the variation in the activity of two other enzymes present in liver tissue in relatively high concentration.

Some Effects of X-irradiation on Oxygen Uptake and Serotonin Levels in Rat Brain Tissue Slices

Description: The aim of this study is to determine the changes in respiration in tissues from specific brain areas X-irradiated in vitro using a direct monometric procedure also to determine the differences in radiosensitivity of specific areas in the brain as reflected by changes in oxygen uptake and to shed some light on the nature of the biochemical lesions in nerve tissues brought about by ionizing radiation.

Microbial Activity in "Overland Flow" Industrial Waste Treatment

Description: One of the major problems of modern industries concerns the disposal of waste materials without the concomitant pollution of the environment. Several food and wood products industries have solved this problem by using the "overland flow" method of waste treatment. The research described in this paper was undertaken to ascertain the fact that the waste purification occurring on the disposal field is the result of microbial activities in the soil, and to study the transformations taking place.

X-irradiation and Drug Effects on Ventral Root Potentials in Cat Spinal Cords

Description: The purpose of the present study was sixfold: 1. To study the effects of x-irradiation on spinal cord activity. 2. To study the effects of CNS drugs on spinal cord function as reflected by changes in the ventral root potentials. 3. To ascertain whether one can alter the observed spinal response to ionizing radiation by applying CNS drugs prior to, during, and following x-irradiation of a given spinal cord segment. 4. To shed some light on the role of higher brain centers on spinal reflexes. 5. To shed some light on the loci of radiation insult to the spinal cord. 6. To establish evidence for a possible drug-irradiation interaction in mammals.

A Serological Study of the Antigenic Fractions of the Aerobic Actinomycetes

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to alleviate this confusion by first testing means of separating the antigenic components of the aerobic actinomycetes--obtaining, if possible, a monospecific antigen. Antisera produced from these monospecific antigens will then be tested for their possible use in the serological grouping of the aerobic actinomycetes.

Regulation of Pyridine Nucleotide Metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Description: The levels of total nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP), and their redox states were determined as the function of growth in S. cerevisiae. Cells growing in a medium containing 0.8% glucose exhibit two phases of exponential growth, utilizing glucose and ethanol, respectively. The NAD pool is 50% reduced during both stages of growth while the NADP pool is 67% reduced in glucose growth and 48% reduced in ethanol growth. The NAD/NADP ratio is constant during growth on glucose and a two-fold increase in the NAD/NADP ratio occurs upon exhaustion of glucose. The increased ratio is maintained during growth on ethanol. This alteration in the regulation of the relative levels of NAD and NADP may be due to a change in the regulation of NAD kinase and/or NADP phosphatase activities. These changes may be related to the redox state of the NADP pool.

Synthesis and Insecticidal Activity of Gem-Cyano Pyrethroids

Description: The synthesis and insecticidal activity of a series of 2,2-dicyano cyclopropane carboxylic acids, (3-phenoxyphenyl)- methyl esters were investigated. Synthesis of the compounds was accomplished by reaction of a dimethyl sulfonium carbethoxy ylide with propanedinitrile alkylidene compounds. Final products were formed in one step by use of the (3-phenoxyphenyl)-methyl ester of the ylide. Insecticidal activity was determined at 500 ppm application with Permethrin as the standard against houseflies, mexican bean beetles, and southern army worms.

Conformation-Activity Studies of Pyrethroid Alcohols

Description: The synthesis and insecticidal activity of certain alcohols (hydroxymethyldibenzofurans, hydroxymethyldibenzothiophenes and some of their ⍺-cyano derivatives), esterified with trans-chrysanthemic acid, were investigated. The preparation of these planar alcohol moieties was undertaken to study conformation-activity effects in insecticides of the pyrethroid type. The synthesis of final ester products employed two methods. One was the direct condensation of the appropriate alcohol with chrysanthemic acid chloride in the presence of pyridine. The other involved the in situ formation of the cyanohydrin from the appropriate aldehyde and subsequent condensation with chrysanthemic acid chloride in the presence of a phase transfer reagent. Insecticidal activity is to be tested at rates of 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 10, 100, and 1000 ppm. Fenvalerate is used as the standard against Diabrotica undecimpuntata (spotted cucumber beetles).
