Chemistry research and development. Progress report, July 1977--May 1978

Description: Studies were continued to determine the compatibility of non-nuclear weapons metals with various production processing materials. The corrosion resistance of 304L stainless steel in mixed acid environment was tested. Intergranular corrosion tests were performed on welded 21-6-9 and 304L stainless steels. A laboratory scale fast fluidized bed incineration system was installed and operating techniques developed. A new uranium chip burning process is being developed. Component development, pilot plant development, and instrumentation and statistical systems development are briefly discussed.

Investigation of the electrolytic dissolution of plutonium

Description: Experiments have shown that it is possible to dissolve plutonium electrolytically in a nitric acid solution. Parameters such as current density and electrolyte composition have been investigated and are discussed. Also included are suggestions for future work.

Plutonium Nitrate Shipping Investigation

Description: With the AEC complex there has been a long history of shipper-receiver assay differences in the transfer of plutonium nitrate solutions. Since the AEC is considering establishing plutonium nitrate as one of the chemical forms of plutonium for Commission purchase of privately produced plutonium, it is necessary that the shipper-receiver problem be resolved. The program formulated by Rocky Flats for doing this, and the results obtained to date, are discussed. (auth)
