Use of hodoscopes at ISABELLE

Description: A major problem for experimenters designing detectors for use at ISABELLE is the high interaction rate, one event every 25 nanoseconds at a luminosity of 10/sup 33/ cm/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/. Typical multiplicities range from a few at large angles (> approximately 45/sup 0/) to approximately 10 nearer the forward direction. This implies average rates as high as a particle every few nanoseconds. For experiments which require high luminosities, detectors must be designed which have very short (appro… more

Computer Facilities for Isabelle Data Handling

Description: The analysis of data produced by Isabelle experiments will need a large system of computers. Included in the array should be a substantial computer system at each Isabelle intersection in use. These systems must include enough computer power to keep experimenters aware of the status of the experiment. This will require at least one very fast sophisticated processor in the system, the size depending on the experiment. Other features of the intersection systems must be a good, high speed graphic … more

El Dorado Micellar-Polymer Demonstration Project third annual report, June 1976--August 1977

Description: The primary objectives of this project are to determine the economic feasibility of improved oil recovery using two micellar-polymer processes and to determine the associated benefits and problems of each process. The El Dorado Demonstration Project is designed to allow a side-by-side comparison of two distinct micellar-polymer processes in the same field so that the reservoir conditions for the two floods are as nearly alike as possible. Selection of sulfonates and polymers for both patterns w… more

Determination of basalt physical and thermal properties at varying temperatures, pressures, and moisture contents. Second progress report, fiscal year 1979

Description: The rock mechanics testing performed at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines for Rockwell Hanford Operations under Subcontract SA-917 is summarized. Cores were supplied from drill hole DC-8 on the Hanford Site, characterized geologically, and tested for thermal and physical properties for designing long-term underground storage of radioactive waste materials. This report presents the approved test procedures, results, and data analysis for this test series. Results indi… more

Conceptual design studies of the Modular Stellarator Reactor (MSR)

Description: A preliminary conceptual study has been made of the Modular Stellarator Reactor (MSR) as a steady-state, ignited, DT-fueled, magnetic fusion reactor. The MSR concept combines the physics of classic stellarator confinment with an innovative, modular-coil design. Parametric tradeoff calculations are described, leading to the selection of an interim design point for a 4.8-GWt plant based on Alcator transport scaling and an average beta value of 0.04 in an l = 2 system with a plasma aspect ratio of… more

Determination of basalt physical and thermal properties at varying temperatures, pressures, and moisture contents. First progress report, fiscal year 1979

Description: This report is a summary of the rock mechanics testing done at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines for Rockwell Hanford Operations under Subcontract SA-917. Cores were supplied from drill hole DC-6 on the Hanford Site, characterized geologically, and tested for thermal and physical properties for designing long-term underground storage of radioactive waste materials. This report presents the approved test procedures, results, and data analysis for this test series. Res… more

Determination of basalt physical and thermal properties at varying temperatures, pressures, and moisture contents. Third progress report, fiscal year 1979

Description: The rock mechanics testing performed at the Earth Mechanics Institute of the Colorado School of Mines for Rockwell Hanford Operations under subcontract SA-917 is summarized. Cores were supplied from drill hole DC-4 on the Hanford Site, characterized geologically, and tested for thermal and physical properties for designing long-term underground storage of radioactive waste materials. The approved test procedures, results, and data analysis for this test series are presented. Uniaxial and triaxi… more

Search for narrow structure in proton-antiproton annihilation cross sections from 1900 to 1960 MeV

Description: The anti pp annihilation cross section has been measured with good resolution (approx.2 MeV rms) in the mass range 1900-1960 MeV. No narrow structures are seen, the 90% confidence level upper limit being 8-12 mb-MeV for the integrated area of a resonance in this mass range. However, we do not rule out a very narrow bump-dip structure seen in an earlier experiment in the 1935-1941 MeV mass interval. The data also do not support the existence of a broad structure previously reported at 1937 MeV.

High resolution studies of atoms and small molecules

Description: High resolution, continuous wave lasers have been utilized successfully in studies of small molecules. Examples of two-photon excitation schemes and of multiple resonance excitation sequences will be discussed within the framework of the spectroscopy and dynamics of selected Rydberg states of nitric oxide. Initial results on the circular dichroism of angular distributions in photoelectron spectra of individual hyperfine states of cesium will also be discussed, but no data given.

Description: Progress made in the implementation of a project designed to determine the economic feasibility of improved oil recovery using micellar-polymer processes and to determine the associated benefits and problems of each system tested is reported. The project allows a side-by-side comparison of two distinct micellar-polymer processes in the same abandoned field so that the reservoir conditions for the two floods are as nearly alike as possible. Experimental investigations of uncovered-bundle heat transfer and two-phase mixture-level swell under high-pressure low heat-flux conditions. [PWR]

Description: Results are reported from a series of uncovered-bundle heat transfer and mixture-level swell tests. Experimental testing was performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the Thermal Hydraulic Test Facility (THTF). The THTF is an electrically heated bundle test loop configured to produce conditions similar to those in a small-break loss-of-coolant accident. The objective of heat transfer testing was to acquire heat transfer coefficients and fluid conditions in a partially uncovered bundle. Test… more

K°LP Interactions at 550 MeV/c

Description: Differential and channel cross sections and hyperon polarizations are presented for the reactions K$sup 0$/sub L/p $Yields$ K$sup 0$/sub S/p, $pi$$sup +$ A$sup 0$, and $pi$$sup +$ $Sigma$$sup 0$ at an average beam momentum of 550 MeV/c. These data provide constraints on KN and anti KN amplitudes obtained from charged kaon reactions and reject one of the S = +1, I = 0 and one of the S equals -1, I = 1 phase shift solutions. (auth)
