Experimental investigation of air-flow uniformity and pressure level on wire cloth for transpiration-cooling applications

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the problem of producing uniform air flow through a calendered or cold-rolled sheet of brazed stainless-steel corduroy wire cloth on 20x250 mesh cloth in regions of low permeability. The effect of exit level was determined at several exit level pressures on three different types of mesh wire cloth. Results regarding airflow uniformity for calendered wire cloth, effect of exit pressure or pressure level on air flow, and permeability and strength of 20x200 mesh wire cloth are provided.

Experimental Investigation of Several Water-Injection Configurations for Turbine-Blade Spray Cooling in a Turbojet Engine

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of water spray cooling of turbine rotor blades with a representative centrifugal-flow turbojet engine. Water injection from several stationary configurations was investigated in order to determine the most favorable configuration on an overall basis. Results regarding blade temperature distributions, cooling efficiencies of various configurations, rotor blades failures, rotor blade spray patterns, and overall comparison of injection configurations are provided.

Design and Experimental Investigation of Light-Weight Bases for Air-Cooled Turbine Rotor Blades

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the problem of air-cooled turbine rotor-blade weight reduction for aircraft gas turbines as part of the NACA turbine-cooling research program. A bulb-root-type blade-base design was achieved which utilized forming and brazing techniques in its manufacture and was combined with an axial-flow turbojet engine aerodynamic profile. Results regarding the sheet-metal bulb-root-type air-cooled base designs, air-cooled pinned-type base design, and some weight reduction considerations are provided.

Investigation of Turbojet Engine Performance at Speeds and Gas Temperatures Above Rated Using Turbine-Blade External Water-Spray Cooling from Stationary Injection Orifices

Description: Memorandum presenting a turbojet engine with a centrifugal-flow compressor which permitted overspeed, overtemperature operation and was modified for spray cooling. The effectiveness of spray cooling as a method which permits operation at overspeed, overtemperature conditions with this engine was investigated and the overspeed, overtemperature performance was obtained. Results regarding the cooling system performance, turbine performance, and engine performance are provided.
