Search for K/sub L//sup O/. --> mu. e at the 10/sup -13/ level

Description: A few of the experimental problems of searching for the lepton non-conserving decay K/sub L//sup O/ ..-->.. ..mu..e are discussed in the light of the experience of BNL E791. This experiment was designed to have high rate capability and excellent background rejection; as such it provides information useful in evaluating designs for similar experiments at high-intensity facilities. The conclusion is that a level of a few times 10/sup -13/ may be reachable, but requires careful design and makes si… more

Measuring pion beta decay with high-energy pion beams

Description: Improved measurements of the pion beta decay rate are possible with an intense high-energy pion beam. The rate for the decay {pi}{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}e{sup +}v{epsilon} is predicted by the Standard Model (SM) to be R({pi}{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}e{sup +}v{epsilon}) = 0.3999{plus_minus}0.0005 s{sup {minus}1}. The best experimental number, obtained using in-flight decays, is R({pi}{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}e{sup +}v{epsilon}) = 0.394 {plus_minus} 0.015 s{sup {minus}1}. A precise measu… more

Experimental investigations in particle physics at intermediate energies. Progress report, December 1, 1980-November 30, 1981

Description: Data-taking on the pion-beta-decay measurement and substantial progress in its analysis are reported. The low-energy anti pp annihilation cross section experiment is near completion. Planning for a new pi-zero-to-three-gamma experiment at LAMPF is complete. The proposal to use the LEAR facility at CERN for further anti pp work has been approved, and some contributions to the preparation of a neutrino experiment proposal at LAMPF.

Experimental investigations in particle physics at intermediate energies. Progress report, December 1, 1981-November 30, 1982

Description: The analysis of the pion-beta decay experiment is complete, with an improvement in accuracy of a factor of two over previous work. Preparations for the search for bound states in anti pp at CERN using the LEAR facility are well advanced. The proposal to use the Crystal Box at LAMPF for a new pi-zero-to-three-gamma experiment has been approved. Work on the neutrino experiment proposal (No. 638) at LAMPF has continued. We expect to make some contributions to the proposal for LAMPF II in the comin… more

Search for Structure in the Low-Energy Anti p-p Annihilation Cross Section

Description: The relative cross section for annihilation of antiprotons on hydrogen into one or more charged pions was measured. Incident beam momentum was 600 MeV/c. Numbers of observed events (relative) were compared with those expected from the sensitivity of the apparatus. A phase-space model was used for p-barp annihilation. Relative cross sections are plotted vs invariant mass. Upper limits on cross sections for the formation of narrow resonances in the S region are given; previously reported structur… more
