Impedance budget and beam stability analysis of the Fermilab Main Injector

Description: The impedance budget of the Fermilab Main Injector (MI) is estimated, which includes the contributions from the resistive walls, bellows, rf cavities, steps, Lambertsons, etc. Beam stability during ramping and bunch coalescence is analyzed. The transverse resistive-wall coupled bunch growth is found to be somewhat worse than the situation in the Main Ring (MR).

Impedance and instability threshold estimates in the main injector I

Description: One of the important considerations in the design of the Main Injector is the beam coupling impedances in the vacuum chamber and the stability of the beam. Along with the higher intensities comes the possibility of instabilities which lead to growth in beam emittances and/or the loss of beam. This paper makes estimations of the various impedances and instability thresholds based on impedance estimations and measurements. Notably missing from this paper is any analysis of transition crossing and… more

Calculating luminosity for a coupled Tevatron lattice

Description: The traditional formula for calculating luminosity assumes an uncoupled lattice and makes use of one-degree-of-freedom lattice functions, {beta}{sub H} and {beta}{sub v}, for relating transverse beam widths to emittances. Strong coupling requires changing this approach. It is simplest to employ directly the linear normal form coordinates of the one turn map. An equilibrium distribution in phase space is expressed as a function of the Jacobian`s eigenvectors and beam size parameters or emittance… more

Advances in the understanding and operations of superconducting colliders

Description: Chromaticity drift during injection is a well-known phenomenon in superconducting colliders, such as the Tevatron, HERA and RHIC. Imperfect compensation of the drift effects can contribute to beam loss and emittance growth. It is caused by the drift of the sextupole component in the dipole magnets due to current redistribution in its superconducting coils. Recently extensive studies of chromaticity drift were conducted at the Tevatron, aiming at the improvement of the luminosity performance in … more

Observations of strong transverse coupling in the Tevatron

Description: During the beginning of Run II of the Tevatron Collider it became apparent that a large skew quadrupole source, or sources, had developed in the superconducting synchrotron. Efforts to locate the current source of coupling were undertaken, with the eventual discovery that the main magnets had developed a systematic skew quadrupole moment over their lifetime. Over the past year, the magnets have been altered in place in an attempt to restore the systematic skew quadrupole moment to zero. Beam ob… more

Expression of Interest: A Muon to Electron Conversion Experiment at Fermilab

Description: We are writing this letter to express our interest in pursuing an experiment at Fermilab to search for neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons in the field of a nucleus, which is a lepton flavor-violating (LFV) reaction. The sensitivity goal of this experiment, improving on existing limits for this process by more than a factor of 10000, is very similar to that of previous experiments that have been proposed but never built. It would provide the most sensitive test of LFV, a unique and … more
