Extrinsic factors affecting accuracy of ultrasonic flowmeters for LMFBRs

Description: Assuming that ultrasonic flowmeters of suitable intrinsic accuracy are feasible, this report explores factors extrinsic to the flowmeter which affect the accuracy such as asymmetric flow profile, regions of high turbulence and thermal stratification. By integrating isovelocity flow profile maps, the predicted performance of various flowmeter configurations may be compared to experimental data. For the two pipe arrangements analyzed, the single diametral path flowmeter results were within 5 perc… more

Field test of a capacitive transducer for density/velocity (mass flow) measurement on the HYGAS pilot plant solvent/coal feedline

Description: It is concluded that: l. The HYGAS experiment testing capacitive measurement of mass flow has shown the method to be feasible. 2. The capacitive method provides an absolute measure of the stream velocity, neglecting the question of correction for flow profiles. That is, the method is absolute but may not be precise. 3. The calibrated density value of capacitance versus char concentration in percent by weight is approximately linear. It appears to be a useful measure of solids concentration in t… more

Study of the State-of-the-Art of Instrumentation for Process Control and Safety in Large-Scale Coal Gasification, Liquefaction, and Fluidized-Bed Combustion Systems

Description: A study has been carried out to determine the state-of-the-art of instrumentation which is available for process control and safety in planned demonstration and commercial scale coal gasification, liquefaction, and fluidized-bed combustion systems. The study identified available instrumentation which will perform satisfactorily in these systems and pinpointed deficiencies for which instruments must be developed. The identified deficiencies fall into the same few categories for all processes con… more
