Fiber optic communication links

Description: Fiber optics is a new, emerging technology which offers relief from many of the problems which limited past communications links. Its inherent noise immunity and high bandwidth open the door for new designs with greater capabilities. Being a new technology, certain problems can be encountered in specifying and installing a fiber optic link. A general fiber optic system is discussed with emphasis on the advantages and disadvantages. It is not intended to be technical in nature, but a general dis… more

Monopole strength as a probe of nuclear shape mixing

Description: The monopole strength, MS, within a single set of nuclear shape excitations is compared with the MS between different shapes. After misconceptions are pointed out concerning the spin dependence of B(E2) values, MS properties are juxtaposed with gamma-ray and beta-decay properties of /sup 70/Se, /sup 96/Zr, /sup 102/Pd, and the N = 60 isotones to illustrate the utility of combined investigations and evidence is given for the observation of a two-phonon octupole multiplet. Finally, consideration … more

An Improved Oscillographic Camera Technique for Time-Resolved Mass Spectrometer Data Recording

Description: A revolving drum camera--oscilloscope data display and recording system was assembled. It provides an effective photographic sensitivity an order of magnitude greater than that previously reported for utilization in time-resolved mass spectrometer analyses of rapidly occurring physical and chemical processes. A gas phase flash heating phenomenon, recorded with a Bendix TOF Mass Spectrometer operating at 20 kc, is cited as an application of the improved data recording system and as an example of… more

Rapid automated nuclear chemistry

Description: Rapid Automated Nuclear Chemistry (RANC) can be thought of as the Z-separation of Neutron-rich Isotopes by Automated Methods. The range of RANC studies of fission and its products is large. In a sense, the studies can be categorized into various energy ranges from the highest where the fission process and particle emission are considered, to low energies where nuclear dynamics are being explored. This paper presents a table which gives examples of current research using RANC on fission and fiss… more

Preliminary definition and characterization of solar industrial process heat technology and manufacturing plant for the year 2000

Description: The findings and projections of this preliminary definition and characterization of a solar industrial process heat technology and manufacturing plant for the year 2000 indicate that the technology and the manufacturing would be significantly more sophisticated and expanded than exists in the solar industry today. The solar process heat technology is defined to be a parabolic trough collector system and to utilize a combination of the more advanced materials and components under current develop… more

Southwest regional geothermal operations research program. Summary report. First project year, June 1977--August 1978

Description: A summary report is given of the information, data, and results presented by New Mexico Energy Institute and the five State Teams in their separate draft reports. The objective is to develop scenarios for the development of each identified geothermal resource area in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. Included are an overview; an economic analysis; institutitional procedures, contraints, and incentives; location of geothermal resources in the southwest; geothermal development postu… more

Evaluation of state taxes and tax incentives and their impact on the development of geothermal energy in western states

Description: The economic impact of existing and prospective state taxes and tax incentives on direct thermal applications of geothermal energy are evaluated. Study area is twelve western states which have existing and potential geothermal activities. Economic models representing the geothermal producer and business enterprise phases of four industrial/commercial uses of geothermal energy are synthesized and then placed in the existing tax structures of each state for evaluation. The four enterprises are a … more

Multigamma-ray calibration sources

Description: We have calibrated a self-consistent set of multigamma-ray standards using the automated multi-spectrometry ..gamma..-ray counting facility at LLNL's Nuclear Chemistry Division. Pure sources of long-lived activity were produced by mass separation and/or chemical purification. The sources were counted individually and in combination on several different calibrated spectrometer systems. These systems utilize various detectors ranging from small (x-ray) detectors to large volume high-purity Ge det… more

Quasi-linear saturation effects on electron-cyclotron-wave damping of the ordinary mode in tokamak plasmas

Description: Quasi-linear theory of electron cyclotron wave absorption for the ordinary mode propagating normal to the tokamak magnetic field is investigated. A two-dimensional initial value code has been developed to investigate the distortion of the electron momentum distribution from an initial Maxwellian. It is shown that for powers of interest for electron heating in future tokamaks, Coulomb electron collisions are not sufficient to avoid quasi-linear flattening of the electron distribution and therefo… more

Magnetic gripper device

Description: A climbing apparatus is provided for climbing ferromagnetic surfaces, such as storage tanks and steel frame structures. A magnet assembly is rotatably mounted in a frame assembly. The frame assembly provides a pair of cam surfaces having different dimensions so that, when the frame is rotated, the cam surfaces contact the ferromagnetic surface to separate the magnet assembly from the surface. The different cam dimensions enable one side of the magnet at a time to be detached from the surface to… more

Geothermal resource, engineering and economic feasibility study for the City of Ouray, Colorado. Final report

Description: A geothermal energy feasibility study has been performed for the City of Ouray, Colorado, to determine the potential economic development opportunities to the City. The resource assessment indicates the resource to be associated with the Ouray fault zone, the Leadville limestone formation, the high thermal gradient in the area of the San Juan mountains, and the recharge from precipitation in the adjacent mountains. Four engineering designs of alternative sizes, costs, applications, and years of… more

Detection efficiency of Ge(Li) and HPGe detectors for. gamma. -rays up to 10 MeV

Description: The relative efficiency up to 9.7 MeV was calibrated for two coaxial detectors, one Ge(Li) and one high purity Ge. The efficiency curves were determined by using a combination of standard radioactive sources and (n,..gamma..) reactions. Based on the result of this work, the general slope of the two detector efficiency curves appears to be similar and in agreement with earlier work reported by McCallum and Coote. When plotted as a semilogarithmic function of energy the efficiency is linear from … more

Design configuration of GCFR core assemblies

Description: The current design configurations of the core assemblies for the gas-cooled fast reactor (GCFR) demonstration plant reactor core conceptual design are described. Primary emphasis is placed upon the design innovations that have been incorporated in the design of the core assemblies since the establishment of the initial design of an upflow GCFR core. A major feature of the design configurations is that they are prototypical of core assemblies for use in commercial plants; a larger number of the … more

Solar Thermal Conversion

Description: The thermal conversion process of solar energy is based on well-known phenomena of heat transfer (Kreith 1976). In all thermal conversion processes, solar radiation is absorbed at the surface of a receiver, which contains or is in contact with flow passages through which a working fluid passes. As the receiver heats up, heat is transferred to the working fluid which may be air, water, oil, or a molten salt. The upper temperature that can be achieved in solar thermal conversion depends on the in… more

Valence effects on solubility and sorption: the solubility of Tc(IV) oxides

Description: The solubilities of technetium (IV) oxides have been determined in solutions of NaCl, HCl, and synthetic groundwaters in the pH range 0 to 10. Oxides were prepared either by electroreduction from Tc(VII) solutions onto platinum electrodes or by precipitation of Tc from Tc(VII) solutions using hydrazine. In some of the determinations, the oxide was precipitated onto purified sand by use of hydrazine. The oxide-covered sand was then placed into a column and the test solution continuously recircul… more
