Experimental determination of the MHD-EMP effects on power distribution transformers

Description: It is a well-established fact that geomagnetic storms influence electrical power transmission and distribution systems. Previous cases of such storms in the northern latitudes have resulted in occasional power disruptions, and in some cases, damage to transformers. These effects are caused by a time variation of the earth's magnetic field creating an induced electric field along the surface of the earth. This E-field acts as a voltage source along long power transmission or distribution lines, … more

Impact of quasi-dc currents on three-phase distribution transformer installations

Description: This report summarizes a series of tests designed to determine the response of quasi-dc currents on three-phase power distribution transformers for electric power systems. In general, if the dc injection is limited to the primary side of a step-down transformer, significant harmonic distortion is noted and an increase in the reactive power demand results. For dc injection on the secondary (load) side of the step-down transformer the harmonic content at the secondary side is quite high and satur… more

Magnetohydrodynamic electromagnetic pulse (MHD-EMP) interaction with power transmission and distribution systems

Description: This report discusses the effects of the late-time high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) on electrical transmission and distribution (T D) systems. This environment, known as the magnetohydrodynamic electromagnetic pulse (MHD-EMP), is a very slowly varying electric field induced in the earth's surface, similar to the field induced by a geomagnetic storm. It can result in the flow of a quasi-dc current in grounded power lines and in the subsequent magnetic saturation of transformers. This s… more

Turbine and hot gas cleanup at Wilsonville

Description: Southern Company Services, Inc. (SCS) has entered into an agreement with the Department of Energy, Morgantown Energy Technology Center (DOE/METC) to design, construct and operate the Hot Gas Cleanup Test Facility for Gasification and Pressurized Combustion. The purpose is to identify and evaluate potential hot particulate cleanup systems on a scale large enough so that these systems can be related to potential commercial system. This entails first developing the criteria for engineering-scale t… more

Status report on the geology of the Oak Ridge Reservation

Description: This report provides an introduction to the present state of knowledge of the geology of the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) and a cursory introduction to the hydrogeology. An important element of this work is the construction of a modern detailed geologic map of the ORR (Plate 1), which remains in progress. An understanding of the geologic framework of the ORR is essential to many current and proposed activities related to land-use planning, waste management, environmental restoration, and waste r… more
