Trawsfynydd Plutonium Estimate

Description: Report serves to document an estimate of the cumulative plutonium production of the Trawsfynydd Unit II reactor (Traws II) over its operating life made using the Graphite Isotope Ratio Method (GIRM). The estimate of the plutonium production in Traws II provided in this report has been generated under blind conditions. In other words, the estimate ofthe Traws II plutonium production has been generated without the knowledge of the plutonium production declared by the reactor operator (Nuclear Electric). The objective of this report is to demonstrate that the GIRM can be employed to serve as an accurate tool to verify weapons materials production declarations.

Assessment of the compositional influences on the toughness of TiCr{sub 2}-base laves phase alloys

Description: Systematic studies of alloys based on TiCr{sub 2} have been performed in order to improve the toughness of Laves phase intermetallics. The extent to which alloy compositions and annealing treatments influence the toughness was quantified by Vickers indentation. The single-phase Laves behavior was first established by studying stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric TiCr{sub 2}. Next, alloying effects were investigated with ternary Laves phases based on TiCr{sub 2}. Different microstructures of two-phase alloys consisting of (Ti,Cr)-bcc+TiCr{sub 2} were also examined. Various toughening theories based on vacancies, site-substitutions, crystal structure (C14, C36, or C15) stabilization, and the presence of a second phase were evaluated. The most effective factors improving the toughness of TiCr{sub 2} were determined, and toughening mechanisms are suggested.

Graphite Isotope Ratio Method Development Report: Irradiation Test Demonstration of Uranium as a Low Fluence Indicator

Description: This report describes an irradiation test designed to investigate the suitability of uranium as a graphite isotope ratio method (GIRM) low fluence indicator. GIRM is a demonstrated concept that gives a graphite-moderated reactor's lifetime production based on measuring changes in the isotopic ratio of elements known to exist in trace quantities within reactor-grade graphite. Appendix I of this report provides a tutorial on the GIRM concept.

Dynamics analyses of space power systems using the salt code

Description: The dynamic behavior of large space power systems has been identified as a significant technical issue. To date several analyses of reactor kinetics have been reported in the literature, but there have been few (if any) studies of the dynamic response of the entire space power system. The problem is complex and required analytical methods are not generally available. Furthermore, given the conceptual state of current MMW space power systems designs, dynamic models of components are not generally available. We have used the SALT code to perform preliminary analyses of the startup and shutdown transients of several proposed MMW system designs. In this paper we will provide a description of the code methodology and present results of the analyses performed for the NERVA derivative reactor (NDR) system. 3 refs., 3 figs.
