Hydrogen Production via a Commercially Ready Inorganic Membrane Reactor, Semi-Annual Technical Progress Report: October 200[5] - March 2006

Description: One of the technical barriers for ceramic membranes is its scale up potential. The conventional ceramic membranes/modules originally developed for liquid phase applications are costly and not suitable for high temperature applications. One of the objectives under this project is the development of a ceramic membrane/module, which is economical and suitable for high temperature applications proposed under this project (200-300 C). During this period, we initiated the fabrication of a prototype c… more

Hydrogen Production via a High-Efficiency Low-Temperature Reformer

Description: Fuel cells are promoted by the US government as a viable alternative for clean and efficient energy generation. It is anticipated that the fuel cell market will rise if the key technical barriers can be overcome. One of them is certainly fuel processing and purification. Existing fuel reforming processes are energy intensive, extremely complicated and capital intensive; these disadvantages handicap the scale-down of existing reforming process, targeting distributed or on-board/stationary hydrog… more

CO2 Selective Ceramic Membrane for Water-Gas Shift Reaction With Concomitant Recovery of CO2

Description: As part of our optimization effort, we have conducted a comprehensive study to investigate the morphology and crystal growth kinetics of hydrotalcite powder formation. Based upon the information obtained from this study, we resumed the membrane optimization activities. Although the selectivity of the membrane remains in the Knudsen regime, the permeance decreases along with the number of impregnation. Thus, the permeance could be reduced to a minimum through repeated impregnation. Then, the mem… more

SiC-Based Hydrogen Selective Membranes for Water-Gas-Shift Reaction

Description: A hydrogen selective membrane as a membrane reactor (MR) can significantly improve the power generation efficiency with a reduced capital and operating cost for the waster-gas-shift reaction. Existing hydrogen selective ceramic membranes are not suitable for the proposed MR due to their poor hydrothermal stability. In this project we have focused on the development of innovative silicon carbide (SiC) based hydrogen selective membranes, which can potentially overcome this technical barrier. SiC … more

CO2 Selective Ceramic Membrane for Water-Gas Shift Reaction With Concomitant Recovery of CO2

Description: During Year I this project has been focused on these two topic areas: (i) understanding comprehensively the CO{sub 2} affinity vs temperature, reversibility of CO{sub 2} affinity, and the role of water in order to select an optimum hydrotalcite composition for membrane preparation, and (ii) developing a membrane synthesis protocol for depositing the hydrotalcite material into a commercially available ceramic membrane from us. This annual report documents the progress we have made in these areas… more

CO2 Selective Ceramic Membrane for Water-Gas-Shift Reaction With Concomitant Recovery of CO2, Quarterly Report: October - December 2001

Description: To become a viable CO{sub 2} transport membrane, a reversible interaction between CO{sub 2} and the membrane material at the operating condition is a must. In the past quarter, we have conducted a comprehensive reversibility study using TGA and MS at {approx}200 C for both adsorption and desorption. This quarterly report summarizes the results. Evidently, CO{sub 2} can be reversible adsorbed and desorbed on the hydrotalcite surface via a pressure swing operation (i.e., between 1 bar and vacuum)… more

CO2 SELECTIVE CERAMIC MEMBRANE FOR WATER-GAS SHIFT REACTION WITH CONCOMITANT RECOVERY OF CO2

Description: Two process schemes have been investigated by us for the use of hydrotalcites we prepared as CO{sub 2} adsorbents to enhance water gas shift (WGS) reaction: Case I involves the adsorption enhanced WGS packed bed reactor and Case II involves the adsorption enhanced WGS membrane reactor. Both cases will achieve the same objective as the hydrotalcite membrane reactor: i.e., improving the WGS reactor efficiency via the concomitant removal of CO{sub 2} for sequestration. In this report a detailed in… more

CO2 SELECTIVE CERAMIC MEMBRANE FOR WATER-GAS SHIFT REACTION WITH CONCOMITANT RECOVERY OF CO2

Description: CO{sub 2} diffusivity through hydrotalcite materials at 200 to 250 C was determined based upon the weight pick-up vs time. D/r{sup 2} (diffusivity/radius{sup 2}) for CO{sub 2} ranges from 3 x 10{sup -4} to 1 x 10{sup -3} depending upon the temperature. This range of diffusivity is consistent with the diffusivities through nanoporous materials, such as pillard clays and carbon molecular sieve, reported in the literature. Further the activation energy calculated based upon the diffusivity as a fu… more
