Preparation of Metallic Titanium by Film Boiling

Description: From abstract: The Van Arkel-deBoer method for producing ductile titanium by thermal decomposition of TiI4 vapor and deposition on an electrically heated filament is modified by film boiling TiI4 liquid on a heated filament, resulting in similar titanium deposition on the filament and liberation of iodine to the gaseous phase."

Radioactive Waste Disposal

Description: Abstract: This is a selective bibliography of books and periodical articles relating to radioactive waste disposal. Material in the bibliography is concerned primarily with methods for the handling and disposal of wastes and the results of these methods. Auxiliary material indicating methods of determining radioactivity in wastes has been included. Sources consulted include: Chemical Abstracts, 1950-1955; Engineering Index, 1950-1955; Industrial Arts Index 1950-March 1957; Nuclear Science Abstracts, 1950-March 15, 1957; Physics Abstracts, 1950-1955; the Library card catalog; and the Technical Information Division AEC card catalog.

Magnetic Field Measurements by Nuclear Resonance

Description: Abstract: The purpose of this report is to outline the work done at the Radiation Laboratory toward the development of a magnetic field measuring device using the phenomenon of nuclear resonance. While the work described here is far from complete, it has served to indicate the limitations of the method as well as some of its possibilities. For reasons which will become apparent, the project is being discontinued. It is hoped that this report will serve as a starting point should the work be continued at some later time and that some of the mistakes already made need not be repeated.

Production of Pi-Mesons in Lead by High Energy Proton Bombardment

Description: Our knowledge of the properties of mesons and their interactions with nuclei has come from two sources. Studies of cosmic ray phenomena provided the earliest information. The discovery that mesons may be produced artificially by bombardment of nuclei with radiations from high energy accelerators has, on the other hand, made it feasible to undertake a wide variety of investigations under more controlled conditions than is possible in cosmic ray experiments. In such experiments mesons have been produced by high-energy protons, alpha-particles and neutrons.

Present Status of the Bevatron R. F. System

Description: The general method of controlling the radio frequency for the full scale Bevatron will be the same as that used on the 1/4 scale machine. The details of course will be modified to meet the requirements of greater range, higher output voltage and closer tracking tolerances. In addition, there is the added complication introduced by the current ripple.

Flux in a Rectangular Cavity.

Description: A problem proposed by E. Hart to determine whether there are locally high or low neutron densities at the corners of a cubical cavity in a graphite lattice. To simplify the computations consider an infinite two dimensional lattice with a square cavity that has a point source of neutrons at the center (see Figure 1).

Neutron Yield in Uranium vs. Energy of Deuterons and Protons

Description: The purpose of this note is to recalculate the semi-empirical curve of neutron yield vs. deuteron energy originally obtained by H. York in order to predict, using it and the best available data, what yields may be expected for deuterons on uranium in the extrapolated energy region.

Calculation of k-o in a Uranium-Graphite Lattice

Description: Since the 25 content of the uranium to be used in a MTA multiplying lattice is quite uncertain at present, it is necessary to assume various degrees of depletion in order to estimate the multiplication constant K-o and the production of 49 in an infinite uranium-graphite lattice
