Proportional wire chamber system for beam definition in precision total cross section measurements

Description: A PWC system was developed and extensively used in precision measurements of total cross sections at low momenta (0.4 to 1.1 GeV/c) and at high momenta (23 to 370 GeV/c). This ''electronic collimator'' operated simultaneously in a fast (250 nsec) decision making mode, and a slower (0.5 msec) readout mode. The decision making mode utilized adjustable hard-wired logic to define acceptable incident beam trajectories and reject multiple beam tracks. A sample of the events were read into an on-line … more

Proposal for a booster to raise the injection energy of the AGS

Description: A proposal to insert a small circumference, energy booster between the 200 MeV Linac and the AGS is presented. The possible increase in AGS performance is pointed out. In particular, one can expect an increase in protons on target for the ..nu.. program, an increase in anti p flux, an increase in AGS operational reliability and an increase in beam brightness for ISABELLE. In addition, and perhaps most significantly, it could allow rapid current accumulation for ISABELLE with reduced aperture re… more

Lossless injection with a chopped H/sup -/ beam

Description: A new method of injection into the AGS using a chopped H/sup -/ beam is proposed. Orbit control, control over the beam characteristics, and the implications for operating the rf system are considered.

A high resolution detector for H{sup 0} {yields} {gamma}{gamma}

Description: SSC detectors represent a challenging departure, both in size and precision, from currently operating detectors. In this note we enumerate some of the benefits of using high magnetic fields both to simplify the detector and improve its resolution and sensitivity. We have chosen an arrangement optimized to search for the reaction H{sup 0} {yields} {gamma}{gamma}. The arrangement also has the excellent momentum resolution for muons and electrons considered critical for the discovery of such proce… more

Low-p/sub t/ physics

Description: This group examined the processes with large cross sections, namely total cross sections, elastic scattering, particle production at low p/sub t/ and diffraction excitation. These are fundamental processes whose experimental study has always been one of the main aims of the physics program of each new accelerator in a new energy domain. The main features of these large cross section processes may be studied experimentally using relatively simple set ups at an early stage of phase I Isabelle ope… more

Study of low mass anti pp pairs produced in n--Be interactions. [Threshold to 2700 MeV]

Description: A search was conducted for narrow resonances in the anti pp mass spectrum from threshold to 2700 MeV in a production experiment. Mass spectra of the K/sup +/K/sup -/ and K/sup -/p states were also extracted from the data, and known resonances were used to check the mass resolution. With a sample of 8393 anti pp pairs, no statistically significant narrow structures were observed.

Total cross sections of K$sup -$p and K$sup -$d from 411 to 1065 MeV/c

Description: Total cross sections of K$sup -$p and K$sup -$d were measured between 411 and 1065 MeV/c with high statistical precision. In addition to the well known $lambda$(1690), $Sigma$(1765) and the $Sigma$(1670), the data show indications of several possible structures in both I = 0 and I = 1 isotopic spin states. (auth)

Radiative decays of K/sub L//sup 0/ mesons. [Branching ratio, improve upper limits, cp-conserving M1 transition]

Description: In an experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS a number of radiative decays of the K/sup 0//sub L/(..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/..gamma.., e/sup +/e/sup -/..gamma.. and ..mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/..gamma..) were studied. The charged particles from these decays were detected in a 5000 wire proportional chamber spectrometer and the gammas were detected in a 194 element lead glass Cherenkov counter array. Preliminary results, based on approximately 25 percent of our total data sample, are … more

Total Cross Sections for K Mesons and π Mesons on Protons and Deuterons between 2.5 and 6 BeV/c

Description: Recent measurements of the pion-proton total cross section, taken with small statistical errors, have shown the existence of two new maxima in the momentum range between 2 and 3 BeV/c. Measurements of comparable statistical accuracy, covering the momentum range from 2.5 to 8 BeV/c are reported in the present paper. In addition to the total cross sections for π± mesons on protons, their total cross sections on deuterons have also been determined. Some data were also taken on the total cross sect… more

Measurement of total cross sections on hydrogen and deuterium

Description: Total cross sections of {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, p and {bar p} on hydrogen and deuterium are to be measured at about eight energies between 20 GeV and the maximum available energy. An accuracy of about one part in one thousand will yield the energy dependence of cross sections, comparisons of cross sections within SU(3) supermultiplets, and stringent tests of high energy limiting theorems.

A search for K sup + yields. pi. sup +. nu. nu. and other rare K sup + decays

Description: Experiment 787 at Brookhaven, a collaboration of groups from Brookhaven, Los Alamos, Princeton, and TRIUMF, is designed to search for rare K{sup +} decays, including K{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{nu}{bar {nu}}, K{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}, and K{sup +} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{gamma}{gamma}. The experiment uses a low-energy, 775-MeV K{sup +} beam from the Low Energy Separated Beam at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The typical kaon intensity entering the detector… more
