Fiddling Carbon Strings With Polarized Proton Beams.

Description: An innovative polarimeter based on proton carbon elastic scattering in the Coulomb Nuclear Interference (CNI) region was first tested in the Brookhaven AGS successfully. CNI Polarimeters were then installed in the AGS and both RHIC rings. The polarimeter consists of ultra-thin carbon targets and silicon strip detectors. The waveform digitizers are used for signal readout, which allows deadtime-less data processing on the fly. Polarimeters are crucial instrumentation for the RHIC spin physics pr… more

A P + Deuteron Proton Polarimeter at 200 MEV

Description: There has been concern about the analyzing power of the p-Carbon polarimeter at the end of 200 MeV LINAC of BNL. A new polarimeter based on proton-deuteron scattering was installed and we have repeated the calibration of proton-Carbon scattering at 12 degrees and 200 MeV against proton-deuteron scattering. The result is consistent with the value of A=0.62 now used to measure the beam polarization at the end of the LINAC.

Commissioning and Future Plans for Polarized Protons in Rhic.

Description: Polarized protons were injected and accelerated in the clockwise ring of RHIC to commission the first full helical Siberian snake ever used in an accelerator. With the snake turned on, the stable spin direction is in the horizontal plane. Vertically polarized protons were injected with the snake off. The snake was adiabatically ramped to give a spin rotation of 180{degree} around a horizontal rotation axis about 13{degree} from the longitudinal. When the beam was accelerated from injection G{su… more

Analysis of polarimeter data for the 2001-2002 RHIC run.

Description: The results of several studies of the 200-MeV (LINAC), AGS (E880), and RHIC polarimeter data from the polarized proton run in 2001/2002 are presented. Much of this work occurred during or immediately after the run. Some of these analyses have implications for the understanding of the performance of the polarized ion source, AGS, and RHIC with polarized protons. Some of the conclusions include: (A) A recalibration of the 200-MeV polarimeter gives results consistent with the older calibration, bu… more

RHIC pC CNI Polarimeter: Experimental Setup and Physics Results.

Description: Acceleration of polarized proton beams and experiments with them at RHIC require fast and reliable measurements of the polarization. The polarimeter presented here uses very high figure of merit of the elastic pC scattering at very low momenta transfer since the cross section is large. Small (a few percent) analyzing power of the reaction makes it necessary to collect about 10{sup 7} events per measurement. A deadtimeless DAQ system for the polarimeter is discussed in this paper. It is based on… more

RHIC PC CNI Polarimeter:Status and Performance From the First Collider Run.

Description: Polarimeters using the proton carbon elastic scattering process in Coulomb Nuclear Interference (CNI) region were installed in two RHIC rings. Polarization measurements were successfully carried out with the high energy polarized proton beams for the first polarized pp collision run. The physics principles, performance, and polarization measurements are presented.

A P-Carbon CNI Polarimeter for RHIC.

Description: The RHIC spin program requires excellent polarimetry so that the knowledge of the beam polarization does not limit the errors on the experimental measurements. However, polarimetry of proton beams with energies higher than about 30GeV poses a difficult challenge. For polarization monitoring during operation, a fast and reliable polarimeter is required that produces a polarization measurement with a 10% relative error within a few minutes. The p-Carbon elastic scattering in the Coulomb-Nuclear-S… more

Conceptual Design Report for a Fast Muon Trigger

Description: This document is a Conceptual Design Report for a fast muon trigger for the PHENIX experiment that will enable the study of flavor separated quark and anti-quark spin polarizations in the proton. A powerful way of measuring these polarizations is via single spin asymmetries for W boson production in polarized proton-proton reactions. The measurement is done by tagging W{sup +} and W{sup -} via their decay into high transverse momentum leptons in the forward directions. The PHENIX experiment is … more
