Past, present and future highlights in top and higgs physics from the CDF experiment

Description: The 1992-1995 running of the Fermilab Tevatron (the so-called Run 1) ended with many important physics goals accomplished, including the discovery of the top quark, and the anticipation of many further questions be to answered in the future. In March 2002, after many detector upgrades by both the CDF and D0 experiments, and significant upgrades of the accelerator itself, the Tevatron Run 2 began (after a detector commissioning run) with the ultimate goal of discovering the Higgs boson. Here, we… more

Silicon Tracking Upgrade at CDF

Description: The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) is scheduled to begin recording data from Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron in early 2000. The silicon tracking upgrade constitutes both the upgrade to the CDF silicon vertex detector (SVX II) and the new Intermediate Silicon Layers (ISL) located at radii just beyond the SVX II. Here we review the design and prototyping of all aspects of these detectors including mechanical design, data acquisition, and a trigger based on silicon tracking.

Silicon detector upgrades for the Tevatron Run 2

Description: The current silicon devices being used by the D0 and CDF collaborations for the Tevatron Run 2a, which is expected to end in 2005 after accumulating about 2 fb{sup -1} of data, will need to be replaced due to radiation damage for the following data collection period designated as Run 2b. We will discuss these silicon replacement plans, the more uniform design of the detectors between D0 and CDF, and the current status of their fabrication.

Commissioning of the control and data acquisition electronics for the CDF Silicon Vertex Detector

Description: The SVX data acquisition system includes three components: a Fastbus Sequencer, an SVX Rabbit Crate Controller and a Digitizer. These modules are integrated into the CDF DAQ system and operate the readout chips. The results of the extensive functional tests of the SVX modules are reported. We discuss the stability of the Sequencers, systematic differences between them and methods of synchronization with the Tevatron beam crossings. The Digitizer ADC calibration procedure run on the microsequenc… more

Production and decays of top quark pairs in the single lepton and dilepton channels at CDF

Description: We present the results from {ital t}{ital {anti t}} production in {ital p}{ital {anti p}} collisions at {radical}s = 1.8 TeV, with decays into one or two leptons plus multiple jets. The full data set accumulated by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron from 1992 through 1995, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 109.4 {+-} 7.2 pb{sup -1}, is used.

Operation of the CDF Silicon Vertex Detector with colliding beams at Fermilab

Description: In this paper we briefly describe the main features of the CDF Silicon Vertex Detector (SVX) and discuss its performance during actual colliding beam operation at the Fermilab Tevatron. Details on S/N ratio, alignment, resolution and efficiency are given.

Exotic Physics: Search for New Physics Leading to High Mass Tau Pairs With ppbar Collisions at 1.96 TeV Using Cdf Ii

Description: Abstract: We present the results of a search for anomalous resonant production of tau lepton pairs with large invariant mass, the first such search using the CDF II Detector in Run II of the Tevatron p{bar p} collider. Such anomalous production could arise from various new physics processes. In a data sample corresponding to 195 pb{sup -1} of integrated luminosity we predict 2.8 {+-} 0.5 events from Standard Model background processes and observe 4. We use this result to set limits on the produ… more
