Supplement F, Production Test IP-314-A, Measurement of fuel element temperature changes as the result of film deposition

Description: This document discusses the test program of evaluating the temperature effect of crud film build-up on fuel element heat generating surfaces in a carbon steel system. This program has three phases: Measurement of the effect of film build-up during normal high pH equilibrium operation; measurement of the temperature effect of film build-up subsequent to a loop decontamination; and measurement of the effect of film build-up in the event of loss of pH control.

Acenaphthene solvents for use in Building 313 Frost Test operation

Description: Acenaphtheno is a low-melting organic compound, C{sub 10}H{sub 6}(CH{sub 2}){sub 2}, used as a temperature indicating coating for slugs tested in the Frost Test induction coil. In preparation for this test, slugs are coated by spraying a 12 to 24 per cent by weight solution of acenaphthene in a high vapor pressure solvent on the rotating slug. The solvent evaporate leaving a thin, adherent coating of acenaphthene. This process is completely described in reference 1. To be entirely satisfactory … more

Production test IP-455-A comparison of N reactor inner fuel tubes with different pre-irradiation warp conditions

Description: The objective of this production test is to compare the irradiation behavior of N Reactor inner fuel tubes (NIE1 elements) having negligible warp after beta heat treatment to the behavior of NIE1 elements with extensive warp after beta heat treatment which were straightened and beta heat treated a second time. The information from this test will be used in the development of a program to evaluate the irradiation behavior of NIE1 elements in various conditions of pre-irradiation warp and straigh… more

Supplement B, production test IP-377-A, irradiation of N-Reactor inner fuel tubes in the KER loops

Description: The objective of this supplement to Production Test IP-377-A is to evaluate the behavior of N Reactor inner fuel tubes with modified end closures during irradiation in the KER Loops. Natural and 0.947% enriched N Reactor inner fuel tubes (NINl and NIEl elements) with contoured end closures are authorized for irradiation in the KER Loops to exposures no greater than 2500 MWD/T. The modification consists of machining a V groove in the uranium after counterboring and using an end cap shaped to fit… more

Supplement C to Production Test IP-250-A, Irradiation of Zircaloy-2 jacketed tube and tube elements in the KER loop

Description: The objective of this Supplement described in this report to Pt-IP-250-A is to d enriched tube-and-tube elements will develop pitting corrosion on the Zircaloy-2 jackets when irradiated in pH 10 water. The measurement of dimensional changes in the fuel elements and the observation of the effect of irradiation on the uranium and bond area are also objectives of the test, but secondary in importance to identifying a pitting corrosion problem in NPR quality water, if one exists.

Supplement A production test IP-314-A, measurement of fuel element temperature changes as the result of film deposition

Description: The objective of this supplement is to determine the effects of operation with neutral pH water on crud deposition on fuel surfaces. This supplement authorizes testing designed to show the effects of coolant pH on the thickness of the crud layer deposited on fuel elements. The supplement will not require additional reactor down time nor will it introduce any hazards to the reactor.

Supplement D, Production Test IP-314-A, measurement of fuel element temperature changes as the result of film deposition

Description: The thermocouple train is modified by the substitution of one eighteen-inch enriched and four twenty-four inch natural uranium tubular elements for the two thirty-six inch enriched tubular elements used on the original thermocouple train. The operating limits for the loading have been changed because of the change in charge power. This supplement also authorizes the addition of fuel elements upstream of the thermocouple train if the thermocouple element and heater elements do not provide enough… more
