Thin film CdS/Cu/sub 2/S solar cells by chemical spraying

Description: This project involves further work on a process developed to make very thin film CdS/Cu/sub 2/S solar cells. The process is adapted to the float glass process and consists of spraying suitable chemicals on a moving ribbon of glass which floats on a bath of molten metal. The spraying produces the necessary thin films (with suitable optical and electrical properties) of SnO/sub 2/, CdS and Cu/sub 2/S. The CdS films produced are two to three microns thick, thus conserving the use of cadmium. The e… more

FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF BULK TRITIUM SHIPPING PACKAGE

Description: The Bulk Tritium Shipping Package was designed by Savannah River National Laboratory. This package will be used to transport tritium. As part of the requirements for certification, the package must be shown to meet the scenarios of the Hypothetical Accident Conditions (HAC) defined in Code of Federal Regulations Title 10 Part 71 (10CFR71). The conditions include a sequential 30-foot drop event, 30-foot dynamic crush event, and a 40-inch puncture event. Finite Element analyses were performed to … more

Development of instrumental methods of analysis of sulfur compounds in coal process streams. Twelfth quarterly technical progress report, July-September 1980

Description: In the extension and refinement of thermodynamic survey and construction of pourbaix diagrams, when warranted by slow kinetics, specified moieties can appropriately be eliminated from consideration while assuming attainment of equilibrium between all other species. In the voltammetric methods development, it was found thaat tetrathionate can be quantitated by differential pulse polarography at the dropping mercury electrode. In the enthalpimetric methods development, sulfide can be determined b… more

Instrumental methods of analysis of sulfur compounds in synfuel process streams. Quarterly technical progress report, October-December 1983

Description: Task 1. Methods development for the speciation of the polysulfides. The contributions of this project to the electrochemical analysis of sulfides and polysulfides are reviewed and summarized. Electrochemical reduction at the dropping mercury electrode (DME) is the method of choice for the determination of polysulfidic sulfur. Total sulfidic sulfur can conveniently be quantitated in mixtures of sulfides and polysulfides, by measuring diffusion currents engendered by the anodic depolarization of … more

CONTAINMENT OF LOW-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE AT THE DOE SALTSTONE DISPOSAL FACILITY

Description: As facilities look for permanent storage of toxic materials, they are forced to address the long-term impacts to the environment as well as any individuals living in affected area. As these materials are stored underground, modeling of the contaminant transport through the ground is an essential part of the evaluation. The contaminant transport model must address the long-term degradation of the containment system as well as any movement of the contaminant through the soil and into the groundwa… more

Rockburst monitoring at the Sunshine Mine, Kellogg, Idaho

Description: The rockburst monitoring system at the Sunshine Mine has recently been improved to increase the certainty of burst locations and to output location results in a manner amenable to easy interpretation. Three methods of location calculation were used: a computer code provided with the hardware in-place (the MP-250), a code based on the least-squares method (Blake et al, 1974), and a nonlinear iterative code written by the principal author. The more accurate locations are given by the latter two c… more

THERMAL MODELING ANALYSIS OF SRS 70 TON CASK

Description: The primary objective of this work was to perform the thermal calculations to evaluate the Material Test Reactor (MTR) fuel assembly temperatures inside the SRS 70-Ton Cask loaded with various bundle powers. MTR fuel consists of HFBR, MURR, MIT, and NIST. The MURR fuel was used to develop a bounding case since it is the fuel with the highest heat load. The results will be provided for technical input for the SRS 70 Ton Cask Onsite Safety Assessment. The calculation results show that for the SRS… more

Cone penetrometer testing (CPT) for groundwater contamination

Description: Over the past decade, researchers at the Savannah River Site (SRS) and elsewhere have greatly advanced the knowledge of waste site characterization technologies. As a result, many of the techniques used in the past to investigate waste sites have been replaced by newer technologies, designed to provide greater protection for human health and the environment, greater access to suspected zones of contamination, and more accurate information of subsurface conditions. Determining the most environme… more

The Fernald Envoy Program: How face-to-face public involvement is working

Description: In March 1994, the Fernald Environmental Management Project (FEMP), initiated the Fernald Envoy Program as a tool for strengthening public involvement in the restoration of the Fernald site, a former US Department of Energy uranium processing facility which ceased operation in 1989 and became an environmental restoration site. Based on the concept that opinion leaders play a key role in the flow of information, the Envoy Program was developed to link Fernald with opinion leaders in community gr… more
