Development and calibration of the shielded measurement system for fissile contents measurements on irradiated nuclear fuel in dry storage.

Description: In recent years there has been a trend towards storage of Irradiated Nuclear Fuel (INF) in dry conditions rather than in underwater environments. At the same time, the Department of Energy (DOE) has begun encouraging custodians of INF to perform measurements on INF for which no recent fissile contents measurement data exists. INF, in the form of spent fuel from Experimental Breeder Reactor 2 (EBR-II), has been stored in close-fitting, dry underground storage locations at the Radioactive Scrap a… more

Results of active well coincidence counter cross-calibration measurements at Argonne National Laboratory-West.

Description: Nondestructive Assay (NDA) of Nuclear Materials (NM) is a common tool used by inspectors involved in Material Protection, Control and Accounting (MPC&A) programs, both domestically and internationally. NDA is generally used to quantify the properties of NM, usually by determining the mass or enrichment of materials such as U-235 or Pu-240. For the NDA of Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) metal, powder or scrap samples, Active Well Coincidence Counter (AWCC) NDA systems are routinely used. These… more

Results of Detailed Characterization on CH-TRU Mixed Waste at Argonne National Laboratory-West

Description: Argonne National Laboratory-West and Lockheed Idaho Technologies Company have jointly participated in the Department of Energy`s (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Experimental Test Program since 1990. A new facility at Argonne was developed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of contact-handled transuranic mixed waste characterization and to decrease the potential for facility contamination and personnel exposures. This new facility, the Waste Characterization Area, was approved for rad… more

Method of Characterizing VOC Concentration in Vented Waste Drums With Multiple Layers of Confinement Using Limited Sampling Data

Description: Characterization of transuranic waste destined for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant currently requires detailed characterization of the volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration in the void volume headspaces (drum headspace, the large polymer bag headspace, and the innermost layers of confinement headspace) of the waste drums. A test program is underway at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) to determine if the drum headspace VOC concentration is representative of the concentrat… more

Radiation measurements of uranium ingots from the electrometallurgical treatment of spent fuel.

Description: Radiation measurements and gamma spectroscopy analyses were made on numerous uranium ingots produced during the treatment of Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) spent nuclear fuel. The objective of these measurements was to provide background data for shielding concerns and potential process optimization. The uranium ingots resulted from the processing of both driver and blanket fuel by the electrometallurgical treatment process. The observed variation in the measurements was traced to the… more

Update on Intrusive Characterization of Mixed Contact-Handled Transuranic Waste at Argonne-West

Description: Argonne National Laboratory and Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Company have jointly participated in the Department of Energy`s (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Transuranic Waste Characterization Program since 1990. Intrusive examinations have been conducted in the Waste Characterization Area, located at Argonne-West in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on over 200 drums of mixed contact-handled transuranic waste. This is double the number of drums characterized since the last update at the 1995 W… more
