Inorganic constituents in American lignites

Description: Both the discrete mineral phases and the ion-exchangeable inorganic components of lignites from Texas, North Dakota, and Montana have been studied. The ion-exchangeable cations and the carboxyl groups with which they are associated were characterized by ion exchange methods utilizing ammonium acetate and barium acetate, respectively. Fabrication and Properties of Seamless Tungsten Tubing

Description: A process for the production of seamless tungsten tubing is described. The process consists of the extrusion of sintered powder sleeves at elevated temperatures to sizes close to the final dimension. The tubing is finished by warm drawing. A size range of 0.100-in, diameter to 1 1/2-in. diameter has been fabricated. A preliminary evaluation of properties of the extruded tubes is given. (auth)

Effects of preoxidation on the swelling and softening of bituminous coals

Description: A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of a DuPont 942-TMA (Thermomechanical Analyzer) dilatometer system for the characterization of the swelling and softening properties of caking coals. The results of this investigation demonstrate the utility of this dilatometer system. Description: To further characterize the Nation's coals, the Penn State Coal Sample Bank and Data Base were expanded to include a total of 1150 coal samples. The Sample Bank includes full-seam channel samples as well as samples of lithotypes, seam benches, and sub-seam sections. Characteristics of American coals in relation to their conversion into clean energy fuels. Quarterly technical progress report, April-June 1979

Description: The study is continuing into the effects of low temperature oxidation on reducing the agglomerating properties of caking coals. Increases in oxidation temperature are shown to increase the effectiveness of oxygen in destroying plastic properties. Controlled studies indicate that additions of small amounts of oxygen (1 to 2% by wt) bring about drastic reductions in swelling properties. Characteristics of American coals in relation to their conversion into clean energy fuels. Quarterly technical progress report, July-September 1978

Description: Certain important aspects of the chemical and physical composition of American lignite coals are being characterized. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to study the interaction between oxygen and seventeen coal chars (40 x 100 mesh) at 100/sup 0/C. The same techniques were used to investigate briefly the interaction between air and a highly caking coal at selected isothermal temperatures in the range 100 to 275/sup 0/C.
