Final report of the High Energy Physics Group at the University of South Alabama, April 15, 1990--April 14, 1997

Description: The experimental high energy physics group at the University of South Alabama worked on three experiments conducted at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. These experiments were E-705, E-771, and E-871. The group helped in taking data, analysis of data, and for one experiment in the construction of a new spectrometer. Experiment E-705 used 300 GeV/c p, {pi}{sup {minus}}, {anti p} and {pi}{sup +} on Li to study hadronic production of charmonium and direct photon production. The authors participated in the E-705 data analysis. They helped in the assembly of the E-771 spectrometer. E-771 used 800 GeV/c p-Si interactions to study hadronic beauty production and charmonium production. The groups task was to bring up the electromagnetic calorimeter and interface it into the data acquisition system. Off-line work done for the analysis of E-771 concentrated on the electromagnetic reconstruction package. Other work done in conjunction with E-771 included the development of a tracking program that used the Hough Transformation. In March of 1994, the group joined Experiment E-871. This experiment is a search for CP violation. The group took responsibility for the scintillation trigger hodoscopes to be used by the experiment.

Measurement of electromagnetic shower position and size with a saturated avalanche tube hodoscope and a fine grained scintillation hodoscope

Description: A hodoscope has been constructed from 100 ..mu.. m diameter wires and brass tubes (1.2 x 0.7 cm/sup 2/ cross section) filled with a mixture of argon, ethane and ethyl alcohol. It has been tested in the saturated avalanche mode in an SCG1-C electromagnetic shower detector to determine its properties for the measurement of the position and size of electromagnetic showers. Two of these tube hodoscopes were positioned 3.5 radiation lengths deep in the detector and the profiles of 1 to 25 GeV electromagnetic showers were measured. Simultaneous measurements were performed using a plane of twenty, 0.5 cm wide scintillation counters positioned immediately behind the gas tube hodoscope. In addition the transition between saturated avalanche and limited streamer modes has been measured for the tube hodoscopes.

Measurement of the response of an SCGl-C scintillation glass array to a 4-14 GeV/c pions

Description: An SCGl-C scintillation glass detector consisting of a 3.5 radiation length SCGl-C active converter followed by scintillation and gas tube hodoscopes and a 4 x 4 array of a 20.5 radiation length SCGl-C counters has been exposed to pions in the 4 to 14 GeV/c momentum range. The response of this detector to pions is compared with the response to electrons of the same momentum in order to distinguish between the two types of particles. Using only longitudinal and tranverse shower development criteria the electrons and pions can be separated such that on average 1.1 x 10/sup -1/ of all pions in the range of 4 to 14 GeV/c would be misidentified as electrons of any energy. If the momentum of the incident particle is known and can be used in the identification technique, this average fraction is reduced to 6.4 x 10/sup -3/ of all pions misidentified as electrons of the same momentum.

Results from the E-705 electromagnetic shower position detector

Description: A fine grain hodoscope to measure the position of showers in the outer (/vert bar/X/vert bar/ > 52cm) region of the E-705 electromagnetic calorimeter is described. The hodoscope is constructed with two layers of vertical conducting plastic tubes for the X position measurement of showers. Y position measurement of showers was accomplished by cathode induced horizontal strips. A 50/50 argon, ethane bubbled though isopropyl alcohol at 0/degree/C gas mixture was circulated through the tubes in parallel. The tubes were operated at +1.925 kv on the wire (below the region of saturated avalanche) in the limited proportionality mode. The hodoscope is described and results are presented for the position resolution, shower width, and charge detected as a function of calibration electron energy. 6 refs., 10 figs.

Measurement of the asymmetry in the decay Antiomega+ ---> Antilambda K+ ---> anti-p pi+ K+

Description: The asymmetry in the {bar p} angular distribution in the sequential decay {bar {Omega}}{sup +} {yields} {bar {Lambda}}K{sup +} {yields} {bar p}{pi}{sup +}K{sup +} has been measured to be {bar {alpha}}{sub {Omega}}{bar {alpha}}{sub {Lambda}} = [+1.16{+-}0.18(stat){+-}0.17(syst)]x10{sup -2} using 1.89x10{sup 6} unpolarized {bar {Omega}}{sup +} decays recorded by the Hyper CP (E871) experiment at Fermilab. Using the known value of {alpha}{sub {Lambda}}, and assuming that {bar {alpha}}{sub {Lambda}} = -{alpha}{sub {Lambda}}, {bar {alpha}}{sub {Omega}} = [-1.81{+-}0.28(stat){+-}0.26(syst)]x10{sup -2}. A comparison between this measurement of {bar {alpha}}{sub {Omega}}{bar {alpha}}{sub {Lambda}} and recent measurements of {alpha}{sub {Omega}}{alpha}{sub {Lambda}} made by HyperCP shows no evidence of a violation of CP symmetry.
