The City of Denton Computer Installation: A Study of Conversion in a Medium-Sized Municipality

Description: It will be the purpose of this thesis to describe and analyze the events and factors which shaped installation of the first electronic data processing system acquired by the City of Denton, Texas--a "medium-sized" municpal organization operating under the council-manager plan. Because the environment may have some degree of effect upon such an effort within the public sector, a certain amount of space will be given over to description of the community as a geographic location, as an aggregation of people engaged in varied activities, and, by implication, as a background for the operation of a municipal government.

Karl Marx and Max Weber: Interpretations of Their Relationship in Social Thought

Description: The thesis is an investigation into the writings of Karl Marx and Max Weber, and the interpretations of their relationship in social thought. The interpretations of the relationship of these ideas have become polarized between Weberian and Marxist camps, characterized by Parsons and Weber. The paper begins with an examination of the writings of Max Weber, specifically with respect to his concepts of institutions, developmental theory, and theory of domination. The work of Marx is next examined with regard to these three topics. The interpretations offered by Parsons and Zeitlin are reviewed. The paper concludes that neither argument offered by Parsons or Zeitlin is altogether correct nor incorrect.

Municipal Government Transition in Denton, Texas

Description: Transition in the form of municipal government is always a complex and challenging task. The process involves serious risks of instability in a municipality's affairs, and this in turn may have adverse consequences for the community as a whole. But at the same time, changes in the form of government and in the personnel responsible for the management of public affairs may hold promise of improvements, which will benefit a city and its citizens. This thesis examines the experience of Denton, Texas, in making a transition from a mayor-commission to a council-manager form of government. T his major governmental change in Denton required several years. The period of transition examined in this study will be from 1955 to the end of 1961.

The Texas Question as a Factor in the Sectional Struggle

Description: "This thesis is an attempt to study the Texas question in its setting with particular emphasis on the sectional ramifications of the issue. It is not an attempt to document the diplomatic negotiations which led to annexation. It is not a attempt to prove that it was the Texas issue which irreconcilably divided the North and South, but it is an effort to assess the importance of the Texas question as a factor in the sectional struggle, by studying the origin, struggle, and climax of the effort to annex Texas to the United States. The chief concern here is with politics and sectionalism in the United States in the years, 1835-1846, and the way in which they affected, or were affected by the question of Texas annexation. Only incidentally, and insofar as they affected the matter under consideration, is there any concern with affairs and events in Texas." --leaf v.
