Reel support for wind the magnet of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility

Description: The reel support has three main functions. It must support the reel, which is 134 in. in diameter, 40 in. wide, and stores up to 8,600 ft of superconductor weighing 8,600 lb. It also must serve as a tensioning device for the superconductor, exerting a force of up to 600 lb. Further, the support must move the reel vertically and laterally to facilitate the winding of the magnets. The support has been designed and is now being fabricated. This paper describes the performance requirements of this … more

Solar silicon via the Dow Corning Process. Seventh quarterly report, January--March 1978

Description: Installation of the Direct Arc Reactor (DAR) system was completed. Reactor start-up was initiated after modifications were made as recommended by the safety start-up team. A series of experiments was started aimed at establishing baseline operating conditions for the DAR. These experiments use pure quartz and unpurified charcoal as reactants. Two baseline experiments were completed. The longest experiment (48h) was terminated on schedule after producing 110 kg of silicon. After initial reactor … more

Solar silicon via the Dow Corning Process. Quarterly report No. 6

Description: Quartz, as the silicon source material, has been identified to be plentifully available at a sufficient purity and reactivity to meet the objective of this program. Further investigations of deposits are warranted when the program reaches a higher level of development. Carbon, as a reductant for quartz, must be made available so as to have suitable reactivity in conjunction with high purity, especially with respect to boron and phosphorus. A detailed experimental plan has been developed to do t… more

Status report on the Los Alamos National Laboratory Ion Beam Facility

Description: The Ion Beam Facility operated for 6000 machine hours last year, ranging in energy from 300 Kev to 24 Mev. Improvements include cryopumps replacing diffusion pumps, a rebuilding of the tandem chopper electronics and the vertical's corona charging system. Methane molecules were successfully accelerated by the vertical in quantities of hundreds of nanoamperes. Two replacement magnet power supplies on the tandem and a completely new capacitor shell regulator on the vertical are soon to be installe… more

DANCE : a 4[pi] barium fluoride detector for measuring neutron capture on unstable nuclei /.

Description: Measurements of neutron capture on unstable nuclei are important for studies of s-process nucleosynthesis, nuclear waste transmutation, and stewardship science. A 160-element, 4{pi} barium fluoride detector array, and associated neutron flight path, is being constructed to make capture measurements at the moderated neutron spallation source at LANSCE. Measurements can be made on as little as 1 mg of sample material over energies from near thermal to near 100 keV. The design of the DANCE array i… more

Detector for advanced neutron capture experiments at LANSCE

Description: The Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE) is a 159-element 4x barium fluoride array designed to study neutron capture on small quantities, 1 mg or less, of radioactive nuclides. It is being built on a 20 m neutron flight path which views the 'upper tier' water moderator at the Manuel J. Lujan Jr. Neutron Scattering Center at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. The detector design is based on Monte Carlo calculations which have suggested ways to minimize backgrounds due to… more
