Design of the MFTF external vacuum system

Description: As a result of major experiment success in the LLL mirror program on start-up and stabilization of plasmas in minimum-B magnetic geometry, a Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF) is under construction. Completion is scheduled for September, 1981. MFTF will be used to bridge the gap between present day small mirror experiments and future fusion-reactor activity based on magnetic mirrors. The focal point of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility is the 35 foot diameter by 60 foot long vacuum vessel which e… more

United States Department of Energy: a history

Description: This pamphlet traces the origins of the Department of Energy and outlines the history of the Department as reflected in the energy policies of Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan. It attempts to place recent energy policy into historical perspective by describing the evolution of the federal Government's role in energy research, development, and regulation.

HIGHLY SELF-SHIELDED BURNABLE POISONS

Description: A new and different type of burnable poison element which can be used essentially to match any decreasing reactivity curve in a reactor and still have a tolerable residue was studied. Specific application is made to Gd as the poison elements; however, the results would be similar for any other suitable high cross-section element such as Cd. (J.R.D.)

Department of Energy 1977--1994: A summary history

Description: The Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 created perhaps the most interesting and diverse agency in the Federal Government. The new department brought together for the first time not only most of the government`s energy programs but also defense responsibilities that included the design, construction, and testing of nuclear weapons. The Department of Energy incorporated a score of organizational entities from a dozen departments and agencies, each with its own history and traditions. U… more

MECHANICAL DESIGN, MATERIALS SELECTION, FABRICATION AND ASSEMBLY OF ULTRACLEAN, HIGH-GAIN, Nd: GLASS DISK LASER AMPLIFIERS

Description: Particulate contamination in disk amplifiers with high flashlamp fluxes (which can generate particles) causes three types of laser beam obscuration, which cause small-scale self-focusing. Methods for obtaining disk amplifiers that stay clean are described. (auth)

First tests with fully depleted PN-CCD's

Description: We have fabricated 280 ..mu..m thick fully depletable pn CCD's on high resistivity silicon ()rho) approx. 2.5 k..cap omega..cm). Its operation is based on the semiconductor drift chamber principle proposed by Gatti and Rheak. They are designed as energy and position sensitive radiation detector for (minimum) ionizing particles and X-ray imaging. Two dimensional semiconductor device modeling demonstrates the basic charge transer mechanisms. Prototypes of the detectors have been tested in static … more

Design of a charge sensitive preamplifier on high resistivity silicon

Description: A low noise, fast charge sensitive preamplifier was designed on high resistivity, detector grade silicon. It is built at the surface of a fully depleted region of n-type silicon. This allows the preamplifier to be placed very close to a detector anode. The preamplifier uses the classical input cascode configuration with a capacitor and a high value resistor in the feedback loop. The output stage of the preamplifier can drive a load up to 20pF. The power dissipation of the preamplifier is 13mW. … more

Spiral silicon drift detectors

Description: An advanced large area silicon photodiode (and x-ray detector), called Spiral Drift Detector, was designed, produced and tested. The Spiral Detector belongs to the family of silicon drift detectors and is an improvement of the well known Cylindrical Drift Detector. In both detectors, signal electrons created in silicon by fast charged particles or photons are drifting toward a practically point-like collection anode. The capacitance of the anode is therefore kept at the minimum (0.1pF). The con… more

Magnetic shielding of neutral beam sources in mirror fusion test facility

Description: The magnetic shields of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility neutral beam sources must keep the inner magnetic field below 0.15 mT inside an unsymmetrical ambient magnetic field of 0.05 to 1.5 T. Numerical computations and 1/10th-scale experiments were used to arrive at a three-layer shield design consisting of two thin nickel-iron alloy shells inside a thick mild steel shell. A 1/10th-scale prototype test confirmed the final design.

Progress in semiconductor drift detectors

Description: Progress in testing semiconductor drift detectors is reported. Generally better position and energy resolutions were obtained than resolutions published previously. The improvement is mostly due to new electronics better matched to different detectors. It is shown that semiconductor drift detectors are becoming versatile and reliable detectors for position and energy measurements.

Thomson Scattering Measurements of Plasma Dynamics

Description: The authors propose to investigate the dynamics of plasmas in the warm dense matter (WDM) regime on ultra-short time scales. Accessible plasma conditions are in the density range of n = 10{sup 20} - 10{sup 23} cm{sup -3} and at moderate temperatures of T = 1 - 20 eV. These plasmas are of importance for laboratory astrophysics, high energy density science and inertial confinement fusion. They are characterized by a coupling parameter of {Lambda} {approx}> 1, where electromagnetic interactions… more

Novel Integrating Solid State Detector With Segmentation For Scanning Transmission Soft X-Ray Microscopy.

Description: An integrating solid state detector with segmentation has been developed that addresses the needs in scanning transmission x-ray microscopy below 1 keV photon energy. The detector is not cooled and can be operated without an entrance window which leads to a total photon detection efficiency close to 100%. The chosen segmentation with 8 independent segments is matched to the geometry of the STXM to maximize image mode flexibility. In the bright field configuration for 1 ms integration time and 5… more

Soft X-ray photoemission studies of Hf oxidation

Description: Soft X-Ray Photoemission Spectroscopy using surface sensitive Synchrotron Radiation has been applied to accurately determine the binding energy shifts and the valence band offset of the HfO2 grown on Hf metal. Charging of oxide films under x-rays (or other irradiation) is circumvented by controlled and sequential in-situ oxidation. Photoemission results show the presence of metallic Hf (from the substrate) with the 4f7/2 binding energy of 14.22 eV, fully oxidized Hf (from HfO2) with the 4f7/2 b… more

Temperature Measurements of Dense Plasmas by Detailed Balance

Description: Plasmas at high electron densities of n{sub e} = 10{sup 20} - 10{sup 26} cm{sup -3} and moderate temperatures T{sub e} = 1 - 20 eV are important for laboratory astrophysics, high energy density science and inertial confinement fusion. These plasmas are usually referred to as Warm Dense Matter (WDM) and are characterized by a coupling parameter of {Lambda} {approx}> 1 where correlations become important. The characterization of such plasmas is still a challenging task due to the lack of direc… more
