Finite difference solution of the diffusion equation on coupled Eulerian and Lagrangian grids. [Improvement to CEL and CHAMP codes]

Description: A diffusion equation modeling the flow of radiation was added to the hydrodynamic equations of two coupled Eulerian and Lagrangian finite-difference computer codes. This addition permits the extension of the range of problems to which these codes may be applied to include those in which temperatures on the order of a thousand electron volts are attained. The coupled codes are first-order-accurate shock hydrodynamics programs designed to calculate transient effects resulting from concentrations … more

Electronic motion in the pre-oscillation phase of a smooth bore magnetron

Description: The calculation of the electronic motion in the pre-oscillation phase of a smooth bore magnetron is the problem of calculating the electronic motion in the region between two concentric cylinders with an applied radial electric field and a constant axial B/sub z/ magnetic field. The inner cylinder represents the electron emitting cathode and the outer cylinder represents the anode. The emission is assumed to be space charge limited. This results in an electronic cloud surrounding the cathode. T… more

Analytical studies of advanced high-field designs: 20-tesla large-bore superconducting magnets

Description: Several emerging technologies have been combined in a conceptual design study demonstrating the feasibility of producing ultrahigh magnetic fields from large-bore superconducting solenoid magnets. Several designs have been produced that approach peak fields of 20-T in 2.0-m diameter inner bores. The analytical expressions comprising the main features of CONDUCTOR and ADVMAGNET, the two computer programs used in the design of these advanced magnets, are also discussed. These magnets and design t… more

Advanced high-field coil designs: 20 TESLA

Description: This study of the technology required for producing large high-field coils has shown that, with some extensions to our present technological base, feasible designs are achievable. The resulting magnets could well make a paramount contribution to the national mirror-fusion endeavor.
