Use of the (t,p) reaction for in-beam spectroscopy studies

Description: Triton induced reactions, such as the (t,p) reaction, can be used for in-beam gamma-ray and conversion-electron studies of nuclei that are somewhat neutron rich. We have developed systems for both conversion-electron and gamma-ray spectroscopy in coincidence with the outgoing energetic proton to identify the (t,p) reaction channel. Data from the /sup 142/Nd(t,p..gamma..) reaction illustrate several of the characteristics of this reaction for studying nuclear structure. Preliminary results from … more

Computerization of atomic level and transition data for the first and second ionization states of the elements hydrogen through phosphorous. [''ATOM'' Computer Code]

Description: A computerized data base of atomic energy levels and atomic transition data has been developed from data published by the National Bureau of Standards. These data are of potential use for laser application. The MASTER CONTROL data-base management system is used. These computerized data can be requested from the ERDA Computer Program Exchange and Information Center of the Argonne National Laboratory or from the National Technical Information Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Time for atomic and molecular data bases is now (an overview of data management research at LLL)

Description: Two numerical data bases of atomic and molecular (A and M) data required for laser-induced fusion studies were created. One file contains primarily atomic energy levels and atomic transition data released by Charlotte E. Moore in NBS publications. The second file is based on the spectroscopic constants for more than 1000 molecular levels of approximately 160 heteronuclear diatomic molecules prepared by S. N. Suchard. Additional data bases are contemplated in support of the accelerating research… more

Computerized data base of the fundamental constants of nature

Description: Fifty-seven fundamental constants of nature were computerized from the up-to-date evaluations of E. R. Cohen and B. N. Taylor. The constants are annotated with regard to symbol, value, uncertainty, and scaling factor. This computerization is part of the scientific data base project of the Information Research Group at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The MASTER CONTROL data base management system is used. The computerized fundamental constants can be requested from the ERDA Computer Program Excha… more

Detection efficiency of Ge(Li) and HPGe detectors for. gamma. -rays up to 10 MeV

Description: The relative efficiency up to 9.7 MeV was calibrated for two coaxial detectors, one Ge(Li) and one high purity Ge. The efficiency curves were determined by using a combination of standard radioactive sources and (n,..gamma..) reactions. Based on the result of this work, the general slope of the two detector efficiency curves appears to be similar and in agreement with earlier work reported by McCallum and Coote. When plotted as a semilogarithmic function of energy the efficiency is linear from … more

Large-scale shell model calculations for odd-odd nuclei and comparison to experimental studies of fission product nuclei in the /sup 132/Sn region

Description: Experimental spectroscopy data of fission products have been obtained using highly automated and rapid chemical separations followed by automated spectroscopy studies of isolated fission products. These data have established the presence of only a single level with spin-parity of 1/sup +/ below 1500 keV of excitation in Z = 51 /sup 132/Sb/sub 81/. This is in contrast to the results of our studies of /sup 130/Sb and /sup 134/I. For /sup 134/I, the N = 81 isotone with Z = 53, we can characterize … more

Investigaton of the beta strength function at high energy: gamma-ray spectroscopy of the decay of 5. 3-s /sup 84/As to /sup 84/Se

Description: The beta strength function up to approximately 8.6 MeV for the system /sup 84/As(..beta../sup -/)/sup 84/Se was investigated. It was found that it is not possible to satisfactorily describe S/sub ..beta../ by a statistical model. From the /sup 84/As decay scheme an experimental beta strength function was deduced. Additional information on the beta transition intensity is obtained from the gross coincidence spectra of individual gamma rays. In total these data suggest that the experimental beta … more

Acquisition, storage, retrieval, display, and utilization of computerized data in the LLL data bank of physical and chemical properties

Description: The demand for evaluated numerical data in the physical sciences and engineering, accentuated by the programmatic objectives of the U.S. ERDA, is being met in part at LLL by the data management research project, which is devoted to the creation of scientific data bases, design and implementation of scientific data management systems, and computer communication and networking. The evolution of this program and the LLL computer systems on which it is based are described. 14 figures. (RWR)

Models for residential- and commercial-sector energy-conservation analysis: applications, limitations, and future potential. Final report

Description: This report reviews four of the major models used by the Department of Energy (DOE) for energy conservation analyses in the residential- and commercial-building sectors. The objective is to provide a critical analysis of how these models can serve as tools for DOE and its Conservation Policy Office in evaluating and quantifying their policy and program requirements. For this, the study brings together information on the models' analytical structure and their strengths and limitations in policy … more

Legal, institutional, and political issues in transportation of nuclear materials at the back end of the LWR nuclear fuel cycle

Description: A study was conducted to identify major legal and institutional problems and issues in the transportation of spent fuel and associated processing wastes at the back end of the LWR nuclear fuel cycle. (Most of the discussion centers on the transportation of spent fuel, since this activity will involve virtually all of the legal and institutional problems likely to be encountered in moving waste materials, as well.) Actions or approaches that might be pursued to resolve the problems identified in… more

Final Report: High Spectral Resolution Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Studies with the ARM UAV

Description: The active participation in the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Unmanned Airborne Vehicle (UAV) science team that was anticipated in the grant proposal was indefinitely delayed after the first year due to a programmatic decision to exclude the high spectral resolution observations from the existing ARM UAV program. However, this report shows that substantial progress toward the science objectives of this grant have made with the help of separate funding from NASA and other agencies. In … more

Measurement of high energy neutrons via Lu(n,xn) reactions

Description: High energy neutrons can be assayed by the use of the nuclear diagnostic material lutetium. We are measuring the (n,xn) cross sections for natural lutetium in order to develop it as a detector material. We are applying lutetium to diagnose the high energy neutrons produced in test target/blanket systems appropriate for the Accelerator Production of Tritium Project. 3 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.

Correlation of effects of fuel-air ratio, compression ratio, and inlet-air temperature on knock limits of aviation fuels

Description: Report presenting a method of relating the effects of fuel-air ratio on the knock-limited charge flow and power of a supercharged engine with those of compression ratio and inlet-air temperature. Knock data obtained in a CFR engine over a wide range of conditions were correlated with eight fuels: 28-R fuel, aviation alkylate, S reference fuel, diisopropyl, triptane, cyclohexane, cyclopentane, and triptene.
