A non-intrusive beam power monitor for high power pulsed or continuous wave lasers

Description: A system and method for monitoring the output of a laser is provided in which the output of a photodiode disposed in the cavity of the laser is used to provide a correlated indication of the laser power. The photodiode is disposed out of the laser beam to view the extraneous light generated in the laser cavity whose intensity has been found to be a direct correlation of the laser beam output power level. Further, the system provides means for monitoring the phase of the laser output beam relati… more

Power applications of high-temperature superconductivity: Variable speed motors, current switches, and energy storage for end use

Description: The objective of this project is to conduct joint research and development activities related to certain electric power applications of high-temperature superconductivity (HTS). The new superconductors may allow development of an energy-efficient switch to control current to variable speed motors, superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) systems, and other power conversion equipment. Motor types that were considered include induction, permanent magnet, and superconducting ac motors. Becau… more

Development of practical high temperature superconducting wire for electric power applications

Description: The technology of high temperature superconductivity has gone from beyond mere scientific curiosity into the manufacturing environment. Single lengths of multifilamentary wire are now produced that are over 200 meters long and that carry over 13 amperes at 77 K. Short-sample critical current densities approach 5 {times} 10{sup 4} A/cm{sup 2} at 77 K. Conductor requirements such as high critical current density in a magnetic field, strain-tolerant sheathing materials, and other engineering prope… more

Development of Biaxially Textured YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} Coated Conductors in the U.S.

Description: Two new processes have been under development since 1991 that promise a new, cost-effective way to manufacture flexible, high current density wires made from YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} (YBCO). The key is to prepare a textured substrate, or ''template,'' on which the YBCO may be deposited as a biaxially aligned thick film. Ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) of yttria stabilized zirconia or magnesium oxide on alloy tapes enables a final superconducting layer with grain-to-grain, in-plane alignm… more

Design of a high power density, permanent magnet, axial gap dc motor

Description: In the design of drive motors for undersea vehicles, the premium placed on noise suppression suggests the use of a brush-commutated dc motor. The additional constraints of weight and volume, as well as unusual configuration, presents the axial air-gap configuration, with a permanent magnet field, as a viable candidate. In such a configuration the design of the brushes and commutator and the resulting structure becomes critical. The report describes a novel solution to this problem. The basic mo… more
