Final Report to the Department of Energy on the 1994 International Accelerator School: Frontiers of Accelerator Technology

Description: The international accelerator school on Frontiers of Accelerator Technology was organized jointly by the US Particle Accelerator School (Dr. Mel Month and Ms. Marilyn Paul), the CERN Accelerator School, and the KEK Accelerator School, and was hosted by the University of Hawaii. The course was held on Maui, Hawaii, November 3-9, 1994 and was made possible in part by a grant from the Department of Energy under award number DE-FG03-94ER40875, AMDT M006. The 1994 program was preceded by similar joint efforts held at Santa Margherita di Pula, Sardinia in February 1985, South Padre Island, Texas in October 1986, Anacapri, Italy in October 1988, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina in October 1990, and Benalmedena, Spain in October/November 1992. The most recent program was held in Montreux, Switzerland in May 1998. The purpose of the program is to disseminate knowledge on the latest ideas and developments in the technology of particle accelerators by bringing together known world experts and younger scientists in the field. It is intended for individuals with professional interest in accelerator physics and technology, for graduate students, for post-docs, for those interested in accelerator based sciences, and for scientific and engineering staff at industrial firms, especially those companies specializing in accelerator components.

PEP-14 data acquisition system

Description: A real-time software system was developed for the VAX 11/780 which employs ten processes cooperating concurrently in the task of data acquisition and on-line analysis for the Free Quark Search experiment at the new colliding beam storage ring facility (PEP) located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The system utilizes most of the resources available to the applications programer under VAX 11/780 VMS, including interprocess communication via mailbox, global event flag cluster, and mapped global section, and is written primarily in FORTRAN IV PLUS with time-critical portions in MACRO-11. A discussion of the system architecture, implementation, and performance is given. 6 figures, 1 table.

Report on the UNIX ``tupleviewer`` challenge

Description: One result of the 1991 B Factory Workshop at SLAC was the definition of a software benchmark project: a user-friendly data browsing tool called a ``tupleviewer``. The tupleviewer is a program which interactively displays 1-D and 2-D graphical plots from data stored as n-tuples. A set of rules define the minimum requirements for the tupleviewer, but the choices for platform, programming language, window system, graphics package and GUI development system are left open. The purpose of this project is to provide an arena in which to compare these open choices, as well as to provide a training exercise. The results of these efforts, including the experiences of the developers and comparisons between the projects are reported. In particular, comparisons are reported between the various GUI tool kits used.

Proposal to study neutrino interactions in the 30 m**3 NAL bubble chamber with muon identifier

Description: We propose to study high-energy neutrino intersections in the NAL 30 m{sup 3} bubble chamber. A slight alteration of the chamber design will allow a large-solid-angle quantameter to be placed just outside the thin (1/2 inch steel) wall of the bubble chamber. A detector, designed to identify the muon of the interaction is placed outside the vacuum tank. With this hybrid system they can reconstruct the neutrino's energy, the lepton momentum transfer squared, Q{sup 2}, the lepton energy transfer and measure many features of the final hadron state. This system detects with high efficiency over the entire range of variables and is well suited to making a detailed general survey of neutrino interactions in the neutrino energy range 15 to 80 GeV. A million-picture exposure would yield tens of thousands of neutrino interactions with circulating protons at 200 GeV. A similar number of events should be obtained with protons at 500 GeV.

Proposal to Study Dilepton Neutrino Interactions with the Triplet Quadrupole Beam, the Phase 1 EMI, and the 15' Bubble Chamber Filled with a H-Ne Mixture

Description: The authors propose to study dilepton neutrino events in the 15-foot bubble chamber using the quadrupole beam. The chamber is filled with at least 80% neon (15 ton fiducial target), the EMI is rearranged into 2 planes to give at least 7 absorption lengths for muon identification and give time coincidence, and the beam has a 1 millisecond spill. This will give about 150 dimuon events and 150 muon electron events per 100,000 pictures. They request 200,000 pictures.

Test of the External Muon Identifier Efficiency

Description: We wish to measure the EMI efficiency at hadron momenta higher than the 3 GeV used at the Beavatron. We propose to use the 30 M{sup 3} bubble chamber as the momentum and spatial analyzer of charged hadrons both of the incident beam and those final state hadrons of interactions that occur within the chamber. We would use the EMI modules as mounted on the bubble chamber vacuum tank to measure the efficiency of the EMI absorbers (coils and zinc) over a wide range of momenta. A hadron signature would be either the lack of a proportional chamber (pc) encoding within the '96% muon-circle' or a multiple PC encoding. We shall attempt to identify {pi}-{mu} decays in the chamber to use as a source of muons. Such a test would give us experience in spatially reconstructing tracks within the chamber and in projecting their trajectories out to the EMI detector modules. The early portion of this test could utilize whatever hadron beam the NAL bubble chamber group would be using at the time. We would make a copy of an adequate number of the original frames and compare the film quality with the original ones to test whether the EMI experiments of any sort, neutrinos or hadrons, could use copies rather than the original film negatives. The later portions of the test may require incident beams of momenta and particles of our choosing. Approximately 10{sup 4} interactions would be needed for the early test.

Bubble-Chamber Study of Dimuon Production by Neutrinos Using the Phase-2 EMI and a Dichromatic Beam

Description: The authors propose to examine in detail, using the 15-foot bubble chamber and an improved (Phase II) EMI, the characteristics of 'dimuon' events produced by neutrinos. A light neon-hydrogen filling (30% neon atoms) provides adequate target mass, good track measurements, and high detection efficiency for photons and electrons. Thus e-{mu} and e-e dileptons, as well as dimuons, can be observed with good efficiency. They estimate a yield of 100 detected dimuons in a 200 K picture expoture. They assume 400 GeV operation, 1 x 10{sup 13} protons/pulse, and a two-horn dichromatic beam focusing 100 {+-} 10 GeV/c mesons. If dimuons are made by neutrinos {ge} 30 GeV, then the yield from this dichromatic beam is about half the yield from a wide-band beam. Knowledge of neutrino energy is important in dimuon analysis. An improved two-plane EMI, as proposed by the UH-LBL group, would provide about 1 kg/cm{sup 2} absorption thickness for particles above 10 GeV/c, thus ensuring excellent dimuon identification. Another proposed EMI improvement, the Internal Picket Fence (IPF), is designed to eliminate EMI random background (mainly neutrino-induced in the internal coil-absorber). this should greatly simplify EMI analysis and reduce the misidentification of low momentum hadrons as muons. Thus they also expect improved efficiency for identification of neutral current events and slow (wide-angle) muons with this Phase II EMI.
