Toroidal helical quartz forming machine

Description: The Scyllac fusion experimental machine used 10 cm diameter smooth bore discharge tubes formed into a simple toroidal shape prior to 1974. At about that time, it was discovered that a discharge tube was required to follow the convoluted shape of the load coil. A machine was designed and built to form a fused quartz tube with a toroidal shape. The machine will accommodate quartz tubes from 5 cm to 20 cm diameter forming it into a 4 m toroidal radius with a 1 to 5 cm helical displacement. The mac… more

Spark-erosion characteristics of graphite and CO gas

Description: The spark erosion characteristic of high-purity graphite and CO for 1-kHz gas blown rail-gap applications has been experimentally evaluated. The test configuration simulates a single channel, 1650-A arc discharge per linear inch of electrode length, with a 44-kV self-breakdown voltage and a transverse gas flow of 98 m/s. The dielectric gas was seeded with a small quantity of azulene vapor and a downstream uv preionization spark was used to assist the self-breakdown of the test electrodes. The e… more

250-Kg Mirror Coil Development for the Linear Scyllac Experiment

Description: The linear Scyllac theta-pinch machine required mirror coils on each end of the 5-m-long lead coil, which would give mirror ratios of two to three times the 100-kG main coil magnetic field. A pulsed magnetic field of 250 RG was established as a design goal for the mirror coils. Several different designs were evaluated using the 178- kJ, 80-kV Scyllac prototype capacitor bank. Calculations were made to determine the coil geometry for each 250-kG cotl design. A copper-lined, steel-jacketed coil, … more

Development of the switching components for ZT-40

Description: Switching of the main capacitor banks for ZT-40 will be accomplished by spark gap switches. Initially, there will be 576 start switches and 288 crowbar switches. A development program is under way to develop three switches; (1) a versatile start switch, which can be used for both the I/sub z/ and the I/sub theta/ capacitor banks, with a wide operating voltage range, (2) a crowbar switch which is capable of crowbarring the circuit without the power crowbar bank, and (3) a power crowbar switch, w… more
