Evaluated decay-scheme data for the ILRR program

Description: The half-lives and $gamma$-ray intensities associated with radioactive decay have been evaluated for nuclides of interest to the Interlaboratory LMFBR Reaction Rate program. The results indicate that for most of the isotopes the decay parameters are known sufficiently well to meet the ILRR goals of 2$sup 1$/ $sub 2$ or 5 percent accuracy in reaction rate measurements. Basic studies of a gas-jet-coupled ion source for on-line isotope separation

Description: A hollow-cathode ion source was used in a gas-jet-coupled configuration to produce ion beams of fission products transported to it from a /sup 252/Cf fission source. Solid aerosols of NaCl and Ag were used effectively as activity carriers in the gas-jet system. Flat-plate skimmers provided an effective coupling of the ion source to the gas jet. Ge(Li) spectrometric measurements of the activity deposited on an ion-beam collector relative to that deposited on a pre-skimmer collector were used to … more

Fission-fragment attachment to aerosols and their transport through capillary tubes

Description: The transport of radioactive aerosols was studied using equipment, collectively called the Helium jet, that has been constructed to provide basic nuclear physics data on fission product nuclides. The transport of the fission products in the system depends on their attachment to aerosol particles. The system consists of 1) a tube furnace which generates aerosols by the sublimation or evaporation of source material, 2) a helium stream used to transport the aerosols, 3) a 25 m settling tube to eli… more

Gamma-ray energies for calibration of Ge(Li) spectrometers

Description: Gamma-ray energies are compared for bent-crystal measurements, Ge(Li) measurements, and other measurements. 150 gamma-ray energies below 3450 keV from 35 isotopes are being calibrated for calibration of Ge(Li) spectrometers. (WHK)

Decay Scheme Information for Analysis of Radiochemistry Foil Measurements

Description: For the radioactivities that are to be observed in the foils in these packets, the available decay scheme literature has been reviewed. Values are presented for the half-lives and the gamma-rays energies and absolute intensities for from one to three prominent transitions from each isotope. The uncertainties (1 δ value) are given for each quantity.

Gamma-ray energies from the /sup 14/N(n,. gamma. ) reaction

Description: A mass difference based B/sub n/(/sup 15/N) value was combined with ..gamma..-ray energy difference measurements to provide a consistent set of ..gamma..-ray energies from the /sup 14/N(n,..gamma..) reaction which are suitable for use as energy calibration standards in (n,..gamma..) spectroscopy.

Rapid separation of individual rare-earth elements from fission products

Description: A microprocessor-controlled radiochemical separation system has been developed to rapidly separate rare-earth elements from gross fission products. The system is composed of two high performance liquid chromatography columns coupled in series by a stream-splitting injection valve. The first column separates the rare-earth group by extraction chromatography using dihexyldiethylcarbamylmethylenephosphonate (DHDECMP) adsorbed on Vydac C/sub 8/ resin. The second column isolates the individual rare-… more

Curved crystal study of de-excitation gamma rays in /sup 184/W following neutron capture

Description: The capture ..gamma..-ray spectrum was studied using the curved-crystal ..gamma..-ray spectrometers installed at the High Flux Reactor of the ILL in Grenoble. Approximately 150 ..gamma..-ray transitions, from approx. 85 keV to 2.33 Mev, were assigned to /sup 184/W. A partial level scheme of /sup 184/W, showing the first four excited positive-parity bands and their de-exciting ..gamma..-ray transitions as observed in this study, is shown. (WHK)

Description: This report describes progress during FY-1975 on the study of the decay properties of selected neutron-deficient nuclides produced by proton-induced spallation reactions in the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) at LASL. These studies include the decay of /sup 128/Ba (2.4 d), /sup 128/Cs (3.9 min), /sup 131/Ba (11.7 d), /sup 134/Ce (75.9 h), /sup 134/La (6.67 min), and /sup 151/Tb (17.6 h), as well as half-life measurements of /sup 134/La and /sup 132/-/sup 135/Ce. Low-neutron-fluence fusion-blanket dosimetry experiment

Description: There is currently a program of integral experiments at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) directed toward evaluating the use of dosimeter materials and techniques in characterizing the neutron fields inside fusion-blanket assemblies. To date, a set of eleven dosimeter reactions have been studied in a simple lead assembly using a 14-MeV neutron generator as the source. The measured reaction rates were used in conjunction with an a priori neutron spectrum (from a Monte Carlo neutro… more

Studies of nuclear resonant absorption of gamma rays : covering the period from September 1 to November 30, 1961

Description: A report about the absorption of gamma rays. Absorption measurements were made using pressures up to 40,000 psi, but no measurable changes were found over this range. Experiments were carried out to determine whether there was any change in the fraction of recoil free emissions of gamma rays.

The SHARP scramjet launcher

Description: The worlds largest light gas gun at SHARP (Super High Altitude Research Project) is completed and in the past year has launched 9 scramjets. Typical masses and velocities are 5.9 kg at 2.8 km/sec.and 4.4 kg at 3.1 km/sec. In so doing SHARP launched the first fully functioning, hydrogen burning scramjet at mach 8. The SHARP launcher is unique in having a 4 inch diameter and 155 foot-long barrel. This enables lower acceleration launches than any other system. In addition the facility can deliver … more
