Example of Monte Carlo analysis applied to repository siting

Description: This report contains a detailed description of a Monte Carlo analysis of a hypothetical nuclear waste repository performed for the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory as part of their mock siting exercise. Field measurements had been used to construct a hydrology model of the geologic medium surrounding a nuclear waste repository, complete with specified uncertainties. The Monte Carlo analysis has been used to ascertaln the uncertainty in the radioactive release from the repository given the uncertai… more

Selection of containment systems for commercial high-level radioactive waste management

Description: This document reports the results of a study aimed at determining the best strategy for providing containment during management of commercial high-level radioactive wastes. Containment to assure public and worker safety is needed for all storage, transport, handling, and disposal operations. There are several thousand containment system options; this work determined, in overview rather than detail, which options should be pursued. This work shows that the geologic and engineered barriers in rep… more

NUTRAN: a computer model of long-term hazards from waste repositories

Description: The NUTRAN package of computer programs calculates doses to humans from radioactivity carried out of deep geologic waste repositories by groundwater. It consists of four codes: ORIGEN (developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory), which treats the formation and decay of radionuclides, WASTE, which computes the transport of radionuclides in ground water, BIODOSE, which calculates radionuclide transport in surface waters and ecosystems and human exposures, and WPPLOT, which combines the results of… more

Analysis of some nuclear waste management options. Volume II. Appendices

Description: This report describes risk analyses performed on that portion of a nuclear fuel cycle which begins following solidification of high-level waste. Risks associated with handling, interim storage and transportation of the waste are assessed, as well as the long term implications of disposal in deep mined cavities. The risk is expressed in terms of expected dose to the general population and peak dose to individuals in the population. This volume consists of appendices which provide technical detai… more
