Evaluation of the solar building, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Final report, April 1974-September 1978

Description: During portions of the 1974-1975 and 1975-1976 winter heating seasons, a field evaluation was made of a solar-assisted heat pump heating system in a small commercial office building in Albuquerque, N.M. The system was comprised of one main water-to-water heat pump and five small water-to-air heat pumps. The liquid-type solar collector array had an area equivalent to about 10% of the building floor area. Other than the ethylene glycol/water solution circulated through the solar collector array, … more

Production of resonances in photon-photon collisions

Description: The subject of production of resonances via two photons in e/sup +/e- colliding beams has finally come into its own. In particular, the eta meson is already changing from this year's sensation to next year's normalization. As for the other old physics mesons with even charge conjugation it seems likely that measurements of the scalar and tensor mesons coupling to two photons are quite doable and will be forthcoming. These will yield some interesting information on the quark content of these sta… more

Systematics of pion double charge exchange

Description: Differential cross sections have been measured for pion-induced double-charge-exchange (DCX) reactions leading to double-isobaric-analog states (DIAS) and low-lying nonanalog states in the residual nuclei. A description of the experimental details and data analysis is presented. The experimentally observed systematics of reactions leading to DIAS, to nonanalog ground states, and to low-lying 2 states are described. Lowest-order optical-model calculations of DIAS DCX are compared to the data. Ef… more

Quark flavor mixing, CP violation, and all that

Description: We review the present state of knowledge of the mixing of quark flavors under weak interactions and the associated explanation of CP violation inherent in the single nontrivial phase present in the three-generation mixing matrix. In this context we present the phenomenological basis for the increasing possibility that large CP violation asymmetries can be experimentally observed in the B meson system. 39 refs., 11 figs.,

Shock initiation of explosive pellets at low temperature. [PETN, PBX-9407, HNS-1]

Description: Electrically-driven flyer plates have been used to initiate the high explosives PETN, PBX-9407 and HNS-1 at 194/sup 0/K and 77/sup 0/K. Electrically-exploded aluminum foils accelerated 51-..mu..m thick plastic flyer plates to impact the explosive pellets. The flyer-plate components and the explosive pellets were cooled to the desired temperature by immersing them in dry ice (194/sup 0/K) or liquid nitrogen (77/sup 0/K). Two firing systems were used. In one system a 0.6..mu..F capacitor supplies… more

Phenomenology of heavy quark systems

Description: The spectroscopy of heavy quark systems is examined with regards to spin independent and spin dependent potentials. It is shown that a qualitative picture exists of the spin-independent forces, and that a semi-quantitative understanding exists for the spin-dependent effects. A brief review is then given of the subject of the decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks, including weak decays at the quark level, and describing corrections to the spectator model. (LEW)

Standard electroweak interactions and Higgs bosons

Description: In the standard model, only one basic component remains to be found: the Higgs boson. The specifics of Higgs boson production and detection, with decay to t anti t and a particular t quark mass range in mind, have not been examined in detail. As such, the working group on Standard Electroweak Interactions and Higgs Bosons at this meeting decided to concentrate on Higgs boson production and detection at SSC energies in the particular case where the Higgs mass is in the range so as to make t anti… more
