Total cross sections and elastic scattering at the SSC

Description: The need is discussed of a special purpose detector for the measurement of elastic scattering at the SSC. The detector would cover as small a solid angle as is practical. Two techniques are described briefly to measure total cross sections at hadron storage rings. The direct method is to measure the interaction rate in an IR of known luminosity - a method that gets more difficult increasing energy. A second method is to use the optical theorem. 6 refs., 1 fig. AGS fixed target program with nuclear beams

Description: The recent approval of the beam transfer line from the Tandem Van de Graaf to the AGS signals the advent of a new era of Nuclear and Particle Physics at BNL. High Energy nuclear beams are expected to be available for experiments in 1986. I will discuss the direct link between the Tandems and the AGS. Two other proposed projects, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Synchrotron Booster, are discussed in another presentation to this conference.

Search for fractionally charged quarks at ISABELLE

Description: A relatively simple experiment is proposed which is sensitive to conventional quarks of charge 1/3 or 2/3e and mass less than 200 GeV. The experiment uses a modest amount of conventional equipment, no magnetic momentum analysis, and in a period of one week will achieve a sensitivity of 10$sup - 36$cm$sup 2$ to isotropic quark production. Despite the experimental simplicity, the signature provided by a fractionally charged quark should be unambiguous. The method and apparatus are described, back… more

Charged particle tracking in high multiplicity events at RHIC

Description: It is generally accepted that the ability to track some fraction of the charged particles produced in heavy ion collisions is very desirable. At a very minimum, one must detect the occurance of multiple interactions in a single crossing. The very tight beam structure at RHIC does not favor time separation, so the location of separate vertices seems the best solution. The limits of tracking large numbers of tracks in a solid angle approaching 4..pi.. have been explored. A model detector consider… more

''Conventional'' Cerenkov counters at ISABELLE

Description: Cherenkov counters to be used with ISABELLE are described. The three counters used in the Hadron Spectrometer can be used to identify particles in the range 10 to 40 GeV/c with pions separated from heavier particles down to approximately 3 GeV/c. A longer spectrometer for 400 x 400 GeV operation should also be used. The spectrometers may be used with CO/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/. The range of particle identification of 8 to 60 GeV/c with pions separated from heavier particles down to approximately 5 … more

Operation of the Brookhaven MPS II Facility

Description: The BNL Multiparticle Spectrometer has recently been equipped with a set of narrow cell drift chambers employing a novel, compact, inexpensive, readout scheme. This has given an order of magnitude improvement in beam rate as well as better spatial resolution. Two experiments have been completed in the first year of operation, a good test of the system. This type of a drift chamber arrangement is ideal for use at high luminosity hadron colliders.

Glueballs in the reaction. pi. /sup -/p. -->. phi phi n

Description: The BNL/CCNY collaboration has increased the statistics on the reaction 22 GeV/c ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. phi phi n from 1203 to approx. = 4000 events. A preliminary partial wave analysis yields three states, all with J/sup PC/ = 2+/sup +/, which we conclude are produced by glueballs. Previously we had two such states, both with J/sup PC/ = 2/sup + +/. The data analysis, and the QCD arguments for these states being produced by glueballs will be presented and discussed.

BNL multiparticle spectrometer (MPS) and an observation of a peak in the anti K/sup 0/. pi. /sup +/. pi. /sup -/ effective mass at 1700 MeV

Description: The MPS is based on a large magnet, 6 ft. x 15 ft. x 4 ft. high, at 10 kG field. The detector consists of magnetostrictive and capacitive readout spark chambers with proportional wire chambers and scintillation counters for triggering. The performance of the system is described, and results from a high statistics study of the reaction K/sup -/p ..-->.. anti K/sup 0/pi/sup +/..pi../sup -/n at 6 GeV/c are presented. A statistically significant (6 standard deviations) peak was observed in the anti… more

Characteristics of the new MPS II spectrometer system

Description: The BNL MPS II is a conversion of the spark chamber detector system of MPS I to a narrow drift space novel drift chamber system. A description is given of this very compact drift chamber system in which the electronics for individual channels is mounted on the chamber. Under actual experimental operating conditions, the chamber shows high resolution of approx. = 200 microns, are dead-time free, and yielded excellent performance. The digital electronics used eliminates channel-by-channel correct… more

Impact of the e-p option on ISABELLE experimental areas

Description: There have been many suggestions for the expansion of existing or planned storage rings to include high energy e-p collisions. There is a general concensus that a facility with protons colliding with electrons and positrons of selectible helicity would provide great insight into weak interactions, nucleon structure, etc., in a way not duplicated at e/sup +/e/sup -/, pp nor anti pp machines. Some aspects of the addition of a 10 to 20 GeV electron ring to Isabelle are discussed.

{Lambda} production in AuAu collisions at 11.6 GeV/c

Description: I present the first measurement at AGS energies of the rapidity and transverse mass distributions for A production with Au beam on Au target. The measurements cover the rapidity region of 2.0 to 3.2 and transverse momenta of 0.0 to 1.4 GeV/c. The results are compared with the predictions of two models.

The STAR detector magnet subsystem

Description: The RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) Accelerator currently under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory will have large detectors at two of its six intersection regions. One of these detectors, known as STAR (Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC), weighs 1100 tons and is being built around a large solenoid magnet. The magnet is 7.32 in in diameter, 7.25 m long and utilizes three different sizes of room temperature aluminum coils. The magnet will operate with a field set from 0.25 T to 0.5 T… more
