Arachne - A web-based event viewer for MINERvA

Description: Neutrino interaction events in the MINERvA detector are visually represented with a web-based tool called Arachne. Data are retrieved from a central server via AJAX, and client-side JavaScript draws images into the user's browser window using the draft HTML 5 standard. These technologies allow neutrino interactions to be viewed by anyone with a web browser, allowing for easy hand-scanning of particle interactions. Arachne has been used in MINERvA to evaluate neutrino data in a prototype detector, to tune reconstruction algorithms, and for public outreach and education.

Study of the Rare Hyperon Decay ${\boldmath \Omega^\mp \to \Xi^\mp \: \pi^+\pi^-}$

Description: The authors report a new measurement of the decay {Omega}{sup -} {yields} {Xi}{sup -} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} with 76 events and a first observation of the decay {bar {Omega}}{sup +} {yields} {bar {Xi}}{sup +} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -} with 24 events, yielding a combined branching ratio (3.74{sub -0.56}{sup +0.67}) x 10{sup -4}. This represents a factor 25 increase in statistics over the best previous measurement. No evidence is seen for CP violation, with {Beta}({Omega}{sup -} {yields} {Xi}{sup -} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = 4.04{sub -0.71}{sup +0.83} x 10{sup -4} and {Beta}({bar {Omega}}{sup +} {yields} {bar {Xi}}{sup +} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = 3.15{sub -0.89}{sup +1.12} x 10{sup -4}. Contrary to theoretical expectation, they see little evidence for the decays {Omega}{sup -} {yields} {Xi}*{sub 1530}{sup 0} {pi}{sup -} and {bar {Omega}}{sup +} {yields} {bar {Xi}}*{sub 1530}{sup 0} {pi}{sup +} and place a 90% C.L. upper limit on the combined branching ratio {Beta}({Omega}{sup -}({bar {Omega}}{sup +}) {yields} {Xi}*{sub 1530}{sup 0} ({bar {Xi}}*{sub 1530}{sup 0}){pi}{sup {-+}}) < 7.0 x 10{sup -5}.

Recent Results from Fermilab E690

Description: Partial wave analysis results of centrally produced mesons in the reaction pp {yields} P{sub slow}(X)P{sub fast}, with 800 GeV/c protons incident on a liquid hydrogen target are presented. In the reactions considered in this paper the (X) system decays into: a) K{sup 0}{sub s}K{sup {+-}}{pi}{sup {-+}}, b) K{sub s}K{sub s}, and c) {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}.

Measurement of the asymmetry in the decay Antiomega+ ---> Antilambda K+ ---> anti-p pi+ K+

Description: The asymmetry in the {bar p} angular distribution in the sequential decay {bar {Omega}}{sup +} {yields} {bar {Lambda}}K{sup +} {yields} {bar p}{pi}{sup +}K{sup +} has been measured to be {bar {alpha}}{sub {Omega}}{bar {alpha}}{sub {Lambda}} = [+1.16{+-}0.18(stat){+-}0.17(syst)]x10{sup -2} using 1.89x10{sup 6} unpolarized {bar {Omega}}{sup +} decays recorded by the Hyper CP (E871) experiment at Fermilab. Using the known value of {alpha}{sub {Lambda}}, and assuming that {bar {alpha}}{sub {Lambda}} = -{alpha}{sub {Lambda}}, {bar {alpha}}{sub {Omega}} = [-1.81{+-}0.28(stat){+-}0.26(syst)]x10{sup -2}. A comparison between this measurement of {bar {alpha}}{sub {Omega}}{bar {alpha}}{sub {Lambda}} and recent measurements of {alpha}{sub {Omega}}{alpha}{sub {Lambda}} made by HyperCP shows no evidence of a violation of CP symmetry.

Lambda0 polarization in p p ---> p Lambda0 K+ (pi+ pi-) at 27.5-GeV

Description: The polarization of 1973 {Lambda}{sup 0}'s from the specific reaction pp {yields} p{Lambda}{sup 0}K{sup +}({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}){sup 5} created by 27.5 Gev incident protons on a liquid hydrogen target, as a function of {chi}{sub F}, P{sub T}, and M{sub {Lambda}{sup 0}K{sup +}}, is, within statistics, consistent with the polarization of {Lambda}{sup 0}'s from pp {yields} P{sub fast} {Lambda}{sup 0}K{sup +} at 800 GeV.

Search for CP violation in hyperon decays.

Description: Direct CP violation in nonleptonic hyperon decays can be established by comparing the decays of hyperons and anti-hyperons. For {Xi} decay to {Lambda} {pi} followed by {Lambda} to p{pi}, the proton distribution in the rest frame of Lambda is governed by the product of the decay parameters {alpha}{sub {Xi}} {alpha}{sub {Lambda}}. The asymmetry A{sub {Xi}{Lambda}}, proportional to the difference of {alpha}{sub {Xi}}{alpha}{sub {Lambda}} of the hyperon and anti-hyperon decays, vanishes if CP is conserved. We report on an analysis of a fraction of 1997 and 1999 data collected by the Hyper CP (E871) collaboration during the fixed-target runs at Fermilab. The preliminary measurement of the asymmetry is {Alpha}{sub {Xi}{Lambda}} = [-7 {+-} 12(stat) {+-} 6.2(sys)] x 10{sup -4}, an order of magnitude better than the present limit.

Examining CP symmetry in strange baryon decay

Description: Non-conservation of CP symmetry can manifest itself in non-lepton ichyperon decays as a difference in the decay parameter between the strange-baryon decay and its charge conjugate. By comparing the decay distribution in the {Lambda} helicity frame for the decay sequence {Xi}{sup -} {yields} {Lambda}{pi}{sup -}, {Lambda} {yields} p{pi}{sup -} with that of {bar {Xi}}{sup +} decay, E756 at Fermilab did not observe any CP-odd effect at the 10{sup -2} level. The status of a follow-up experiment, HyperCP (FNAL E871), to search for CP violation in charged {Xi}-{Lambda} decay with a sensitivity of 10{sup -4} is also presented.
