Livermore Big Trees Park Soil Survey

Description: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) will sample and analyze soil in the Big Trees Park area in Livermore, California, to determine if the initial level of plutonium (Pu) in a soil sample taken by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in September 1993 can be confirmed. Nineteen samples will be collected and analyzed: 4 in the area where the initial EPA sample was taken, 2 in the nearby Arroyo Seco, 12 in scattered uncovered soil areas in the park and nearby school, and 1 from the sandbox of a nearby apartment complex. Two quality control (QC) samples (field duplicates of the preceding samples) win also be collected and analyzed. This document briefly describes the purpose behind the sampling, the sampling rationale, and the methodology.

Leaching study of nuclear melt glass: Part I

Description: Ground samples of three nuclear melt glasses from underground nuclear explosions at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) were leached at 25/sup 0/C with natural ground water from NTS. Using our dynamic single-pass flow-through leaching system we monitored the release of radionuclides from the glasses during 420 days of leaching. We continually flowed the ground water over the melt glass at flow rates of 185 ml/day for half of the samples and 34 ml/day for the rest. Leachate solutions were collected continuously, and composite samples, collected on days 1, 2, 3, 6, 11, 32, 38, 70, 120, 230 and 420, were analyzed using low-background Ge(Li) gamma spectrometers. For most of the radionuclides the leach rate decreased smoothly throughout the experiment. Except for /sup 95/Zr, /sup 144/Ce, and /sup 155/Eu, there was no difference between the fast (185 ml/day) and slow (34 ml/day) flow-rate leach rates. The measurable leach rates ranged from a high of 1 x 10/sup -2/ g-glass/m/sup 2/ day for /sup 22/Na (slow flow-rate, day 1 in glass No. 2) to a low of 1 x 6/sup -6/ g-glass/m/sup 2/ day for /sup 54/Mn (slow flow-rate, day 420 in glass No. 2). Most of the leach-rate values were about 5 x 10/sup -4/ g-glass/m/sup 2/ day initially, decreasing to 5 x 10/sup -6/ g-glass/m/sup 2/ day after 420 days of leaching. The leach rates had not leveled off by the end of the experiment and were, in general, continuing to decrease. From the activities in the leachate solutions, we determined the percent of the pre-leach activity leached from the melt glasses during the experiment. Only /sup 124/Sb, in one fast flow-rate channel of glass No. 2, exceeded 3% of the initial activity leached. Environmental Report 1995. Volume 1

Description: This report contains the results of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory`s (LLNL) environmental monitoring and compliance effort and an assessment of the impact of LLNL operations on the environment and the public. This first volume describes LLNL`s environmental impact and compliance activities and features descriptive and explanatory text, summary data tables, and plots showing data trends. The summary data include measures of the center of data, their spread or variability, and their extreme values. Chapters on monitoring air, sewage, surface water, ground water, soil and sediment, vegetation and foodstuff, and environmental radiation are present.

Environmental report 1995. Volume 2

Description: This is Volume 2 of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory`s (LLNL`s) annual Environmental Report 1995. This volume is intended to support summary data from Volume 1 and is essentially a detailed data report that provides additional data points, where applicable. Some summary data are also included in Volume 2, and more detailed accounts are given of sample collection and analytical methods. Volume 2 includes information in eight chapters on monitoring of air, air effluent, sewage, surface water, ground water, soil and sediment, vegetation and foodstuff, and environmental radiation, as well as three chapters on ground water protection, compliance self-monitoring and quality assurance.

Environmental Report 1994, Volume No. 1

Description: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facility operated by the University of California, serves as a national resource of scientific, technical, and engineering capability. The Laboratory`s mission focuses on nuclear weapons and national security, and over the years has been broadened to include areas such as strategic defense, energy, the environment, biomedicine, technology transfer, the economy, and education. The Laboratory carries out this multifaceted mission in compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulatory requirements. It does so with the support of the Environmental Protection Department, which is responsible for environmental monitoring and analysis, hazardous waste management, environmental restoration, and ensuring compliance with environmental laws and regulations. LLNL comprises two sites: the Livermore site and Site 300. The Livermore site occupies an area of 3.28 square kilometers on the eastern edge of Livermore, California. Site 300, LLNL`s experimental testing site, is located 24 kilometers to the east in the Altamont Hills, and occupies an area of 30.3 square kilometers. Environmental monitoring activities are conducted at both sites as well as in surrounding areas. This summary provides an overview of LLNL`s environmental activities in 1994, including radiological and nonradiological sampling and surveillance monitoring, remediation, assessment of radiological releases and doses, and determination of the impact of LLNL operations on the environment and public health.

Radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident

Description: This report describes the detection of fallout in the United States from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident. As part of its environmental surveillance program, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory maintained detectors for gamma-emitting radionuclides. Following the reactor accident, additional air filters were set out. Several uncommon isotopes were detected at the time the plume passed into the US. (TEM)

Radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident

Description: Following the accident at the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl, in the Soviet Union on April 26, 1986, we performed a variety of measurements to determine the level of the radioactive fallout on the western United States. We used gamma-spectroscopy to analyze air filters from the areas around Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), California, and Barrow and Fairbanks, Alaska. Milk from California and imported vegetables were also analyzed. The levels of the various fission products detected were far below the maximum permissible concentration levels.

LLNL NESHAPs project. 1992 annual report

Description: This report summarizes work conducted during FY 1992 for the Environmental Monitoring and Analysis Division of the Environmental Protection Department at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). This document contains information regarding environmental monitoring of a wide variety of radioisotopes which are emitted to the atmosphere. These radioisotopes include transuranics, biomedical tracers, tritium, mixed fission products, and other radioisotopes used for general research and nuclear weapons research. Information regarding radionuclide air emissions for each of the 56 buildings at LLNL where radionuclides are used or activation products occur is given. Detailed information is included for all point source emissions from 43 LLNL site buildings. In addition, dose equivalents and dose assessment are evaluated. Reported annual releases are based on inventory data and unabated EPA potential release fractions for unmonitored sources, and on actual emission measurements for continuously monitored facilities.
