Application of the optical absorption technique to the characterization of the carbonaceous component of ambient and source particulate samples

Description: The optical absorption properties of some ambient and source particulate samples have been measured. These results suggest that the absorptivity is due to graphitic soot and that a major fraction of the ambient carbonaceous aerosol in the winter and summer episodes investigated is primary in origin.

Non-ammonium reduced nitrogen species in atmospheric aerosol particles

Description: The traditional belief that ambient aerosol particles contain nitrogen predominantly in the form of inorganic ionic species such as NH/sub 4//sup +/ and NO/sub 3//sup -/ was challenged about 10 years ago by results from x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis (ESCA) of California aerosol particles. A significant fraction (approx. 50%) of the reduced nitrogen was observed to have an oxidation state more reduced than ammonium, characteristic of organic nitrogen species. We have used a recently… more

Graphitic carbon in urban environments and the Arctic

Description: Recent measurements of aerosol particles indicate the presence of a large optically absorbing component which can cause visibility degradation and climatic effects. The nature of this absorbing species has been investigated by a variety of modern methods of analysis, which has led to its identification on a microscopic level as graphitic (black) carbon. In our paper this methodology is described and extended to the quantification of graphitic carbon and its absorption coefficient. New results f… more
