FUETAP (formed under elevated temperatures and pressures) concretes as hosts for radioactive wastes

Description: Cementitious solids formed at less than or equal to 250/sup 0/C and less than or equal to 1000 psi offer excellent possibilities as hosts for radioactive wastes. Preliminary results are presented on the effect of mix composition, temperatre, and pressure on the physical properties of the resulting solids. Initial leach results are encouraging in the assessment of the ability of these FUETAP concretes to isolate radionuclides from the environment.

Strontium leachability of hydrofracture grouts for sludge-slurries

Description: A series of experiments to determine the strontium leachability of cement-based sludge-slurry hydrofracture grouts is summarized. The hydrofracture process has been used at ORNL since 1966 for the routine disposal of intermediate-level waste (ILW) solutions. Disposal of Iodine-129

Description: One of the problems to be solved in the nuclear waste management field is the disposal of radioactive iodine-129, which is one of the more volatile and long-lived fission products. Fixation of Radioactive Wastes in Concretes and Cementitious Grouts

Description: An investigation is in progress to develop concretes to immobilize radioactive wastes; for example, /sup 129/I may be isolated from the environment as barium iodate in concrete. Leach studies of various isotopes (I, Cs, Sr, Cm, and Pu) fixed in concrete show that the leach rates are essentially diffusion controlled. Comparison of long-term extrapolated values has indicated that cementitious grouts can have leach rates similar to those obtained from borosilicate glasses. (2 figs., 5 tables)
