Synthesis of metastable aluminum-based intermetallics by mechanical alloying

Description: We have used mechanical alloying (MA) to prepare fine-grained powders of Al 25 at. % X (X = Ti, Zr, Hf) having the metastable cubic L1{sub 2} structure. Hexane (C{sub 6}H{sub 14}) is added to the milling media to avoid the agglomeration of the aluminum powder. Carbon from the decomposition of the hexane incorporates into the powder to form a fine dispersion of carbides. These carbides are beneficial because they limit grain growth during consolidation and add strength to the alloy. We have cons… more

Phase stability in the Al sub (6-x) Cu sub x Zr sub 2 system for 0 < x < 1. 0

Description: We have determined the structures and thermal stability of Al{sub (6{minus}x)}Cu{sub x}Zr{sub 2}(0 < {times} < 1) powders prepared by mechanically alloying elemental powder mixtures. In the as mechanically alloyed condition the structure is Ll{sub 2} for all x. After heating to 750{degree}C the alloy is single phase DO{sub 23} for 0 < {times} < 0.6, and remains in the Ll{sub 2} phase for 0.6 < {times} < 1. Al{sub 5}CuZr{sub 2} is stable in the Ll{sub 2} structure up to 1300{degree}C. The lattic… more

Texture evolution in upset-forged P/M and wrought tantalum: Experimentation and modeling

Description: Preferred orientations in polycrystalline materials can significantly affect their physical and mechanical response through the retention of anisotropic properties inherent to the single crystal. In this study the texture evolution in upset-forged PIM and wrought tantalum was measured as a function of initial texture, compressive strain, and relative position in the pressing. A <001>/<111> duplex fiber texture parallel to the compression axis was generally observed, with varying degrees of a ra… more
