Experimental evaluation of 350 MHz RF accelerator windows for the low energy demonstration accelerator

Description: Radio frequency (RF) windows are historically a point where failure occurs in input power couplers for accelerators. To obtain a reliable, high-power, 350 MHz RF window for the Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) project of the Accelerator Production of Tritium program, RF windows prototypes from different vendors were tested. Experiments were performed to evaluate the RF windows by the vendors to select a window for the LEDA project. The Communications and Power, Inc. (CPI) windows wer… more

Energy and technology review. [NONE]

Description: The articles describe the electric gun, a versatile tool for studying initiation properties of explosives; microcomputers and computer networks; and the preferred parts concept, which may mean that metric conversion will pay for itself by elimination of duplication. Brief items also report on progress in geothermal programs, the lithium--water--air battery program, and uncertain conclusions in the study of ozone depletion. 6 figures. Separate abstracts are prepared for the individual articles f… more

Resonant ring for testing of accelerator RF windows

Description: A klystron-driven resonant ring has been designed and assembled at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for use in the Accelerator Production of Tritium Project (APT). The ring was built to test rf windows for the 700 MHz section of the APT accelerator. The ring has been designed to apply an effective power of approximately 1 MW on test windows. Details of ring design, operation and performance will be presented.

Results and lessons learned from conditioning 1 MW CW 350 MHz coaxial vacuum windows

Description: The reliability of the radio frequency (RF) windows on the Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) is critical to the success of the Accelerator Production of Tritium Program (APT). On the APT accelerator there will be over 1,000 windows, each passing on the order of 250 kW of CW RF power. This power level is well above power levels historically used in RF windows. Based on the high-power RF test results of the RF window prototypes from vendors, the coaxial windows made by EEV Ltd. of Chelm… more

Technology development: HEPA filter service life test plan

Description: Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site (the Site) has approximately 10,000 High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters installed in a variety of filter plenums. These ventilation/filtration plenum systems are used to control the release of airborne particulate contaminates to the environment during normal operations and also during potential design-based accidents. The operational integrity of the HEPA filter plenums is essential to maintaining the margins of safety as required by buildin… more

An overview of the Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) project RF (radio frequency) systems

Description: Successful operation of the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) plant will require that accelerator downtime be kept to an absolute minimum. Over 230 separate 1 MW RF systems are expected to be used in the APT plant, making the efficiency and reliability of these systems two of the most critical factors in plant operation. The Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) being constructed at Los Alamos National Laboratory will serve as the prototype for APT. The design of the RF systems used… more

Design, operation, and test results of 350 MHz LEDA RF system

Description: The Low Energy Demonstration Accelerator (LEDA) being constructed at Los Alamos National Laboratory will serve as the prototype for the low energy section of Acceleration Production of Tritium (APT) accelerator. The APT accelerator requires over 244 RF systems each with a continuous wave output power of 1 MW. The reliability and availability of these RF systems is critical to the successful operation of APT plant and prototypes of these systems are being developed and demonstrated on LEDA. The … more

Simulation of high-average power windows for accelerator production of tritium

Description: Development of a robust, high-average-power (210 kW, CW) microwave transmission line system for the Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) facility is a stringent engineering and operational requirement. One key component in this RF transmission system is the vacuum barrier window. The requirement of high-power handling capability coupled to the desirability of good mean time to failure characteristics can be treated substantially with a set of microwave, thermal-structural, and Weibull analys… more

The SNS linac high power RF system design, status, and results

Description: The Spallation Neutron Source being built at the Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee requires a 1 GeV proton linac. Los Alamos has responsibility for the RF systems for the entire linac. The linac requires 3 distinct types of RF systems: 2.5-MW peak, 402.5 MHz, RF systems for the RFQ and DTL (7 systems total); 5-MW peak, 805 MHz systems for the CCL and the two energy corrector cavities (6 systems total); and 550-kW peak, 805 MHz systems for the superconducting sections (8 1 systems total). The … more

High power testing of the 402.5 MHZ and 805 MHZ RF windows for the spallation neutron source accelerator

Description: Hisorically, Radio Frequency (RF) windows have been a common point of failure in input power couplers; therefore, reliable RF windows are critical to the success of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) project. The normal conducting part of the SNS accelerator requires six RF windows at 402.5 MHz and eight RF windows at 805 MHz[l]. Each RF window will transmit up to 180 kW of average power and 2.5 MW peak power at 60 Hz with 1.2 millisecond pulses. The RF windows, designed and manufactured by Th… more

Testing Procedures and Results of the Prototype Fundamental Power Coupler for the Spallation Neutron Source

Description: High-power RF testing with peak power in excess of 500 kW has been performed on prototype Fundamental Power Couplers (FPC) for the Spallation Neutron Source superconducting (SNS) cavities. The testing followed the development of procedures for cleaning, assembling and preparing the FPC for installation in the test stand. The qualification of the couplers has occurred for the time being only in a limited set of conditions (travelling wave, 20 pps) as the available RF system and control instrumen… more
