Pocatello 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ NTMS area Idaho. Data report: National Uranium Resource Evaluation program, hydrogeochemical and stream sediment reconnaissance

Description: This data report presents results of groundwater and stream/surface sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Pocatello 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ quadrangle. Surface samples (sediment) were collected from 1701 sites. The target sampling density was one site per 16 square kilometers (six square miles). Ground water samples were collected at 381 sites. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for uranium and 16 other elements in sediments, and for uranium and 9 other elements in ground water. Mass spectrometry results are given for helium in ground water. Field measurements and observations are reported for each site. Analytical data and field measurements are presented in tables and maps. Statistical summaries of data and a brief description of results are given. A generalized geologic map and a summary of the geology of the area are included. Data from sediment sites include: (1) stream water chemistry measurements where applicable (pH, conductivity, and alkalinity); and (2) elemental analyses for sediment samples (U, Th, Hf, Al, Ce, Dy, Eu, Fe, La, Lu, Mn, Sc, Sm, Na, Ti, V, and Yb). Sample site descriptors (stream characteristics, vegetation, etc.) are also tabulated. Areal distribution maps, histograms, and cumulative frequency plots for most elements; U/Th, U/Hf, and U/La ratios; and scintillometer readings for sediment sample sites are included on the microfiche. Uranium concentrations in sediments of the Price quadrangle are relatively low, with a maximum value of 14.7 ppM. The mean of the logs of uranium values in sediments is 0.38, which corresponds to a value of about 2.4 ppM. Many of the lowest uranium concentrations occur in the northern part of the San Raphael Swell, in the southeastern portion of the quadrangle. Ground water sampling sites are too widely dispersed to allow preliminary interpretation.

Lewiston 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ NTMS area Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont: supplemental data report

Description: This data report presents supplemental analytical results for 1168 stream sediment samples that were collected as part of the SRL-NURE reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) Lewiston 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ quadrangle. Results are reported for 23 elements (extractable, U, Ag, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, K, Li, Mg, Mo, Nb, Ni, P, Pb, Se, Sn, Sr, W, Y, and Zn). Evaluation of Proposed New LLW Disposal Activity: Disposal of Aqueous PUREX Waste Stream in the Saltstone Disposal Facility

Variations in Slit Trench Dimensions to Allow Disposal of Large Components

Description: Some large components exist that have radionuclide concentrations low enough that they meet the WAC limits for Slit Trenches, but they are too large to be directly disposed in slit trenches of the nominal dimensions. This analysis considers the effect of the variations and concludes that such variations will meet the disposal requirements set by the performance assessment.

Addendum to the Composite Analysis for the E-Area Vaults and Saltstone Disposal Facilities

Description: Revision 1 of the Composite Analysis (CA) Addendum has been prepared to respond to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Low-Level Waste Disposal Facilities Federal Review Group review of the CA. This addendum to the composite analysis responds to the conditions of approval. The composite analysis was performed on the two active SRS low-level radioactive waste disposal facilities. The facilities are the Z-Area Saltstone Disposal Facility and the E-Area Vaults Disposal Facility. The analysis calculated potential releases to the environment from all sources of residual radioactive material expected to remain in the General Separations Area (GSA). The GSA is the central part of the Savannah River Site and contains all of the waste disposal facilities, the chemical separation facilities and associated high-level waste storage facilities, as well as numerous other sources of radioactive material.

Discovery of Disposal of Low-Level Waste in Slit Trench Segments Shallower than Analyzed in Performance Assessment

Description: The effect of disposing of low-level waste in slit trenches that are shallower than those analyzed in the revised performance assessment for the E-Area low-level waste facility is evaluated. The conclusion of the evaluation is that such disposal is bounded by the performance assessment if all of the disposed waste packages meet the slit trench Waste Acceptance Criteria and if at least four feet of soil is placed over the disposed waste packages.

Groundwater Pathway Scoping Analysis for Disposal of APT and TEF Wastes

Description: The methods used to analyze the long-term performance of APT and TEF waste, with respect to the groundwater pathway, disposed in Intermediate Level vaults are described in this report. The purpose of this work is to reduce the number of radionuclides that need to be considered in a detailed analysis of performance. A methodology was selected that is more rigorous than the screening analysis described earlier1, but still conservative enough that radionuclides shown to have minimal dose impact using the methodology can be neglected with assurance that they would not have produced significant results if included in a detailed computer model.

Radiological performance assessment for the E-Area Vaults Disposal Facility

Description: This report is the first revision to ``Radiological Performance Assessment for the E-Area Vaults Disposal Facility, Revision 0'', which was issued in April 1994 and received conditional DOE approval in September 1994. The title of this report has been changed to conform to the current name of the facility. The revision incorporates improved groundwater modeling methodology, which includes a large data base of site specific geotechnical data, and special Analyses on disposal of cement-based wasteforms and naval wastes, issued after publication of Revision 0.

Composite analysis E-area vaults and saltstone disposal facilities

Description: This report documents the Composite Analysis (CA) performed on the two active Savannah River Site (SRS) low-level radioactive waste (LLW) disposal facilities. The facilities are the Z-Area Saltstone Disposal Facility and the E-Area Vaults (EAV) Disposal Facility. The analysis calculated potential releases to the environment from all sources of residual radioactive material expected to remain in the General Separations Area (GSA). The GSA is the central part of SRS and contains all of the waste disposal facilities, chemical separations facilities and associated high-level waste storage facilities as well as numerous other sources of radioactive material. The analysis considered 114 potential sources of radioactive material containing 115 radionuclides. The results of the CA clearly indicate that continued disposal of low-level waste in the saltstone and EAV facilities, consistent with their respective radiological performance assessments, will have no adverse impact on future members of the public.

Development of Probabilistic Uncertainty Analysis Methodology for SRS Performance Assessments Maintenance Plan Activities

Description: An initial uncertainty analysis of the Performance Assessment (PA) model of the Savannah River Site (SRS) trench disposal unit was conducted. Selected input data values were varied for both flow and transport analyses to generate input sets called realizations. Outputs of fluxes to the water table and well concentrations were compared to results from the PA. This stage of the uncertainty analysis served as a prototype for future work. The focus was to lay the foundation for a more comprehensive analysis, generate a limited set of output results, and learn about the process and potential problems.

Description: This abbreviated data report presents results of ground water and stream sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series Little Rock 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ quadrangle (Cleveland, Dallas, and Howard Counties do not have stream sediment analyses); the El Dorado 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ quadrangle (only Clark County has stream sediment analyses); the western part (Lonoke and Jefferson Counties) of Helena 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ quadrangle; the southern part (Franklin, Logan, Yell, Perry, Faulkner, and Lonoke Counties) of Russellville 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ quadrangle; and the southwestern corner (Ashley County) of the Greenwood 1/sup 0/ x 2/sup 0/ quadrangle. Greater confinement disposal program at the Savannah River Plant

Description: A demonstration Greater Confinement Disposal facility, consisting of twenty GCD boreholes, began accepting solid low-level radioactive waste at the Savannah River Plant in 1984. Three of the boreholes have been filled with the higher activity fraction of SRP solid waste. They have been stabilized with grout to prevent subsidence and reduce water infiltration. Closure will take place when all twenty boreholes have been filled. A Greater Confinement Disposal trench project is underway, with construction scheduled to begin in November 1985. Trench volume will be 10,000 cubic feet. 2 figs.
