SLUG PROGRAM QUARTERLY REPORT FOR APRIL, MAY, JUNE 1953

Description: Preliminary results are reported on the coating of U by immersion in nonreacting molten Mg saturated with Zr, Ni, or Si. A corrosion analysis of the resulting Mg-- Zr outer coat was performed on one failure occurring in boiling water. Further experiments are described on the corrosion testing of Cu-plated and Zn-dipped U. Improvements in the Zn-dip process are uncertain, however, because hot-dip Zn coats show comparable corrosion characteristics. Investigations have been conducted on the castin… more

VANADIUM-CHROMIUM ALLOY SYSTEM

Description: On the basis of data obtained from melting point determinations, microscopic examination, and x-ray investigations, a phase diagram is proposed for the V-Cr alloy system The system forms a complete series of solid solutions with a minimum occurring in the solidus at 1750 deg C and approximately 70 wt.% Cr. No intermediate phases were found in this system. Hardness and corrosion data are presented as a function of alloying composition. (auth)

High Purity Calcium

Description: Technical report. From Introduction : "For more than a century, methods employed in preparing calcium were based largely on electrowinning and the most successful were based on [Sir Humphrey] Davy's process. ... In general, the metal was of adequate quality for the industrial applications of the time, and although by 1940 some strides had been made in the purification of calcium, interests in the better grades of the metal were limited essentially to experimental work of academic concern."

Tensile Properties of Yttrium-Titanium and Yttrium-Zirconium Alloys

Description: Complete series of yttrium-titanium and yttrium-zirconium alloys was tested in tension at room temperature. Ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and reduction in area data are reported for the alloys. Yield point phenomena were encountered in both alloy systems. (auth)

Internal friction peaks due to interstitials in bcc alloys

Description: Richter's and Snoek's original works established the existence of an anelastic relaxation produced by a stress-induced interstitial reorientation in bcc metals. This anelastic relaxation, now referred to as a Snoek peak, has been studied extensively and well characterized in the past for the interstitials carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. The existence of a hydrogen Snoek peak in bcc metals has been a matter of some controversy, however. We have studied relaxation peaks in V, Nb, and V-Nb alloys re… more

Muon diffusion and trapping studies in high purity vanadium. [Temperature dependence]

Description: The first results of a study of the effects of varying impurity concentration on the temperature dependence of the depolarization rate of positive muons implanted into vanadium are presented. Data are reported for the most highly purified polycrystalline sample yet measured, and the same sample subsequently doped with about 500 ppM oxygen by weight. The data for the pure sample shows a low depolarization rate (< .15 ..mu..sec/sup -1/) at all temperatures measured, showing a broad minimum center… more
